Mrs. Splat's 244 met an unfortunate end last week when she hit a retread on the interstate - busted the transmission cooler line and promptly dumped most of the fluid out. She (at my urging) limped the Silver Bullet another few miles to my brother's house, and the damage was done Line was replaced, but the transmission is no longer working properly, to say the least.
We looked at several other makes, but we couldn't leave the Volvo fold, and ended up buying an '02 S40.

So far, she loves it. I drove it today on a 300-ish mile road trip, and was very happy with how it drove. Suspension is tighter than my T5, and I was impressed with the auto transmission. 34.1 mpg according to the trip computer on half the journey (reset it after a fill-up), and that was with the cruise set between 73 and 77, AC on.
Curious to see if there are any "gotchas" with this model we should be watching out for. This car has just over 52k miles. Don't even have an owner's manual yet (dealer is getting us one).

Re: New to the S40 family! (Splat)

hi; i have a 2003 v40 with the same miles as mrs. splatt.
the only thing i have noticed is that the tranny likes it when it has had its tranny fluid drained. i have done it three times, just a drain and fill of about 3.3 quarts. the fluid is available at many parts houses as mobil atf 33099 about 4$). the volvo stuff is quite pricy.
other than that we have used synthetic motor oil after breakin. and no other issues have evolved.
also you must add to your favorites; s40concepts.net. it is one of the best sites for our cars. this one is not very active for the earlier 40 series.
you did well with the second generation of this car it is a real improvement over the early ones.

Thanks - it had a fresh oil change when we bought it, but the next one will be a switch to synthetic. I learned over the weekend that this car seems to use the same paper filter insert as my T5, so time to start buying in bulk
This may seem like a really stupid question - but is there a transmission fluid dipstick somewhere under there? I couldn't find an obvious one, and I think the manual just skips over it.

Re: (Splat)

hi; yes the filter is the same for my cars also. i like the mann filters from ipd, but i bought a case of 12 from fcpgroton for 54$(4.50 each) this week and compared it to the volvo oem filter. the groton ones are mahle and are IDENTICAL to the volvo one, right down to the color of ink and the made in austria on it. even the number of pleats and the color of the bonding, so i would get those or the ipd mann filters. ipd has 10 for 54$ but they go on sale often.
groton drain plug washers are .20$ while ipd is.75$ each i think.
the transmission dipstick is yellow, retained by a thumb movable clip down just under the turbo pipe. you may need to look from the battery side to see it, it is in the front of the engine so it is servicable. kind of awkward but it can be gotten to. i think the folks at volvo would rather sell you a new tranny than do something nice for the owners like make it simple.
i am thinking of rigging an extension tube and make my own dipstick by modifying one from some other car.
hope this all helps.

So it's below which pipe, the one that leads from intercooler to throttle body? I'll take another look tomorrow.
This car is making me think evil thoughts about my T5. I never cared much for cosmetic mods, but the clear headlights on the S40 are making me think very hard about e-codes for the other front-driver
