The wife's car: Silver metallic '06 s40 T5, FWD 205-50-R17
The car needs new tires, might be interested in new wheels since the wife and curb duke'd it out far too many times. I don't really care to replace the wheels(since their road rage is just gonna happen again), but if I wanted to, it would be now since I can get tirerack to mount/balance for free. Apparently the Borbet XL's are not being offered for the car, in a search I found some guys running them however.
tireracks top selling...(and in order I'm looking to buy)
Dunlop Sport Signature
Kumho Exsta's
Michellin (OEM replacements)
Car is a work go getter, I might get it once or twice on the weekend for a more spirited affair and that's about it. We live in south Florida and really looking for a highway tire with low noise and some sport functionality
Any suggestions or other alternatives on tires?

Re: New tires, maybe wheels (benjr)

Toyo Proxes T1R are amazing, and if the weather is nice they are great, and they are also very well rated for rain. A little on the expensive side, but some super nice tires! For stock wheel size they probably aren't too expensive, but for low profile they get pricey.

I think the stock michelins are garbage. They always seem to be the tire i see that have the odd wear and get chewed up way to easily. Ive had good experiences with having Kumho tires in the past and now currently are rocking a set of Yokohama S drives which seem to be up to par to the NW weather and bombing up dry Mt baker switchbacks in the summer

My C30 has a set of Kumho Ecsta SPTs.
Grippy tires with good wear... I approve.

Re: New tires, maybe wheels (genjy)

Toyo T1Rs are lovely tires but wear super fast on daily drivers (I went through 'em like crazy). I'd recommend the Kumho Ecsta Supras or Michelin Pilots for a good all round tire. Both wear well and have minimal road noise too. Not as grippy as the T1Rs but a good balance of affordability and performance.

Re: New tires, maybe wheels (Kallvin22)

no votes for the Dunlop eh? Local dealer said it was a new tire maybe why, but it's listed as popular on tirerack...
To me being extra grippy means softer compound..ie faster wear, more road noise.
Dunlops are $104
Kumho Ecsta APX/SPTs $93
Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 are $115...swaying away from these as its a direct replacement. The OEMs have 34k on them and pieces missing with not much tread left on 'em.
You guys aren't giving me straight answers haha...nah its ok, tires are just as diverse as the drivers on them.
For you guys who purchased from tirerack before, when they say 2 day delivery is it indeed 2 days from the point you order @ say 8am?

Re: New tires, maybe wheels (benjr)

I will be getting 3 summers or 75000 klm from my Exstas. (That is really 2/3 of 75000) Good performance, smooth ride ,quiet when new and reasonable now that they are old.
This also includes some track time which took off about 1/8 of the rubber in 20 minutes.
BTW: If you want to save on wear I noticed that the first year with the stock sway bar the front tires wore twice as fast. With a 25MM bar the wear rate evened out noticably.

i like the performance of the Goodyear f1 a/s but they suck when it comes to road noise and comfort.

Re: (Kallvin22)

Pirelli are nice but there are other ones out there that compare. I have Pirelli four seasons on my S60 and they are alright, but I think they are a lower end Pirelli. The higher end ones are probably a lot nicer. Hankook Ventus 4es or something like that are hard to beat for the price, but if performance matters more than price I love my Toyo Proxes T1Rs that are on the S40.
