Today walking up to my car from a bit of a distance, looking at the rear end I noticed that the right side was quite a bit higher than the left. When I measured it, I could easily fit the width of 4 fingers between the top of the tire and the wheel well on the right, but it was a squeeze to fit 2 finger widths between the tire and the well on the left side.
The car was empty with nothing but a briefcase in the back, so it wasn't something I was carrying. It has been driving the same as usual, side hop no worse, overall suspension feel no different. Not throwing any codes. It has been making a creaking noise, inconsistently, when going over railroad crossings or other things that cause more suspension travel.
I drove a couple miles to my office, and the differential between the 2 sides lessened to between 1 and 2 finger widths between tire and well. I can still see it with the naked eye, but only if I was looking for it...so I wonder if it has been canted like this for some time, and I only noticed it when it was temporarily more pronounced.
So, I called up my dealer who said to drive by and they'll take a peek, the (new) SA asked me "does this have an air adjustable suspension?" (Oh, god, help me. Problem is, the svc mgr who over the past year I had carefully cultivated a decent relationship with abruptly left, and so there was subsequently more turnover, again ). Anyway, he went and talked to a tech who said it was ok to drive until my 30k service in a few weeks.
Anybody have any insights on what this might be? I did have the IPD rear sway installed a few months back, I suppose this could have a role here. Bad shock? Seems like I'd get a code if so. Anyway, any thoughts would be appreciated.
thanks
Ken

The obvious problem could be the surface you're parking on...

Re: new suspension weirdness... (kenschel)

Ken Moose-
When was last alignment? That is all I can think or bad spring is possible but normally you would have all kinds of problems if it really was the suspension

Re: new suspension weirdness... (Helmut Ranff)

Helmut, last alignment was too long ago, I'm getting one in a couple weeks at 30k svc. I wondered about alignment, but didn't think mis-alignment could cause the car's stance to be so cockeyed..or at least not without also causing something obvious in how it drives. You think it is possible?

Get it on 100% LEVEL ground and remeasure.
You can't believe how much difference there can be if the ground is not completely level

Re: new suspension weirdness... (JRL)

understood; the gas station where I first noticed this seemed pretty darn flat but the eyes can deceive. I'll see what my carpenter's level tells me about my garage floor when I get home. thanks JRL

Oh yes, rear camber does effect ride height and when you mention it being only a couple of fingers it makes sense.
So lets say the left/right camber is different and then this is combined with the surface you are on is also not perfectly level
This way the misalignment is not extremely severe although the rear camber is not the same by some amount

Re: new suspension weirdness... (SilverS60RNYC)

Sorry then Ken. I thought the AWD had rear camber adjust
I guess then weak spring or just the ground is uneven
