The following images emerged of the wagon and convertible versions of the new Saab 9-3. Expect to see them sometime next summer or fall. As far as I can tell, they seem to be genuine. It's kind of disappointing there is not a hatchback version of the 9-3 yet, but I still have hope.

Should the competition be worried?

They look good to me! (But I ought to warn that I'm partial to silver & black...) They look much better here than in prior photos. The last ones I saw made me think "Impala". (Ick.) But these two look darn sharp!
On a separate, yet related note, when, oh, WHEN is the hatchback gong to take off here in the USA?! THAT is what all these SUV drivers need...hatchbacks. The hatchback is such an untapped potential here on this side of the pond. When are the marketing types going to see the light?!

Probably the best styled Saab to date. I've never been crazy about the Saab styling (or many other cars at that) but the 9-3 is turning out to be more of a head turner. I'd like to see one up close before I pass total judgement.

I trust you mean in regards to the V/XC 70? I'd have to agree. Though the V70 really doesn't have any real competitors considering its size and price. The BMW 3-series, Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4 Avant and now this Saab 9-3 while have sedans that compete with the S60, their wagons are all much, much smaller. To get the size, usability and versatility of the V70 one must go to the A6 Avant, BMW 5-series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class all of which are priced much, much higher than the V70. The V70 is quite safe and likely to remain such.
However, I certainly think the V40 may have some problems along with the smaller, German wagons. Judging from the 9-3 sedan's price, Saab will be offering a comprable car for much less.

Awesome- looking?
As in you have seen it!?!
If so, could you perhaps describe it at all? Does it depart from the themes in the XC90 and S60 and the recent show cars? What about the interior...similiar to that of the XC90's? I'm a huge fan of the XC90's interior.
You noted fall 2003 as to when we will have it. By that did you mean when it will premiere at an auto show or when it will be available for purchase in the states?
What will be the bhp on the engines? That is one thing Saab seems to be lacking, adequate horsepower. The most powerful engine for the 9-3 seems to have only 210 hp. The 9-5 tops out at 250. Perhaps when they implement their SVC (the 1.6 liter gets 225 hp) they will finally catch up.
Sorry for all the questions!

I'd love to hear some news about the next S40/V50. Volvo has been very quiet about it, and the current S40/V40 are in dire need of replacement. If the V50 happens to be somewhat sporty and available with a 6-speed manual or CVT at a reasonable price (let's say mid to high 20's), Volvo may have a new customer right nere.

quote:
Awesome- looking?
As in you have seen it!?!

Can' tell you in detail but I have had access to what to the car is going to look like. A sportier version of the S60, a little smaller but with as much room in the rear seat or a tiny bit more. It is very unique in regards to the exterior; from the top it looks like a sailing boat...very streamlined in the front, "fat" sides and tapers sharply in the rear....VERY NEAT!
ANd in a couple of years you will a drastic redesign of the in;ine engines... Which will enable some pretty neat packages like a...T-6 engine in an S60 engine bay...
Yannis
