Diesel pollution has turned out to be much worse than originally presented. Diesel NOx has killed many. Even so, diesel was incentivized by many European governments, making it popular in some locales. Many diesel Volvo's were sold.

I'm impressed that Volvo has made this decision. This is a big change that could not have been easy to decide.

Congrats!

It is a good move by Volvo but at the same time I can't help but to be more than a little cynical about the decision to start the phase-out of diesel with the new S60 sedan.

Details about the new V60 were released only a couple of months ago with two diesel engines (D3 & D4). Why not start the phase out with the new V60? I think a large part of the answer there is that wagons are still very popular in Europe (perhaps even more so than sedans in some markets) and Volvo didn't want to alienate customers there.

Same sort of argument with the new XC40. The XC40 is first and foremost a city SUV. Surely given the impact of diesel emissions in populated areas Volvo should have launched the XC40 without diesel engines. But again, the XC40 is a key new model for Volvo and perhaps launching with diesel models would have badly effected sales against the XC40's competitors and their diesel models (again I'm referring to European markets).

Still I suppose Volvo had to start somewhere.

I thought they would wait for the mild 48V hybrid models come out then discontinue diesel engine the same year.
That would make a better transition. Stopping diesel right now the first year S60 buyers have to stuck with sub-optimal fuel consumption.

The press release says no more diesel engines in any new Volvo models in 2019 and later. S60 seems to be the beginning of the end for diesel.

Of course, petrol is going away too at some point....

I’m starting to feel old as I reminisce and associate the smells of gas and oil with my ‘72 Dodge Demon college car that needed something replaced every week.
