In 2002 Michelin will offer again a special trophy to the drivers taking part in the FIA European Touring Car Championship. Last year the Clermont Ferrand-based tire Manufacturer awarded two different trophies: one for the Super Touring Amateurs and the other for the Super Production Under-25-year-old drivers. Those trophies were won by Italian Sandro Sardelli in a Pro Motorsport Nissan Primera and German Norman Simon in a Ravaglia Motorsport BMW 320i respectively.
In the coming season there will be only one Michelin Trophy for which all the drivers taking part in the FIA ETCC will be eligible. Points will be awarded according to the fastest laps set in each of the championship rounds, following the very same scale adopted for the European Championship’s classification.
Ten points will be awarded to the driver setting the fastest lap in the race, six to the driver setting the second-fastest lap, and so on: four, three, two and one. An additional point will be awarded to the drivers setting pole position at each race meeting. Michelin Trophies will be awarded to the first three drivers in the trophy’s final classification.
