I'm the proud new owner of an exceptionally mantained 2006 S60R. I have discovered that it is lacking but two possible options....IAQS and laminated windows. I now know what IAQS is (wish I had it) but what are laminated windows? Is that to suppress sound?

My understanding is that it's mainly a safety thing, preventing pieces of glass spraying the interior in the event of a side impact collision. I believe it also aids in preventing someone from breaking in to the car, as presumably the glass wouldn't shatter and it would require a thief to spend a few more moments getting in to the car. And lastly, maybe it makes the car quieter, but I wouldn't swear on it.

The IAQS, (interior air quality system) is basically a charcol filter in your ventilation system. I think I got the acronym correct.....
Laminate glass, is something about filtering UV rays, or what not.... All car glass is pretty much safety glass now.
Re: New R owner with a few questions. (inteller)

well as I understand it the laminate glass ended up being an anti-theft feature though I don't know if that was the original intent, I suppose it was really a safety feature. It is hard to break through.
welcome and enjoy your R!

The laminated glass option is actually a very strong plastic (or similar) that is sandwiched between two sheets of glass. It serves many excellent purposes and is a bargain for the price of the package.
This is a very interesting read:
http://www.theautochannel.com/....html
I know this is a bit corny, but it's neat!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNeDj4UYUoM
Tim

do you know what package that was in? I have the Premium package....and I think the climate package.
Really wish there was a way to add IAQS as this state doesn't have vehicle inspections so I get a nice whiff of exhaust smoke from clunkers around here all the time. Sounds like IAQS would help stop that before it gets in the car.

It is easy enough for you to put in the activated charcoal filter, if it has not already been done. Just pull the non charcoal filter from the front slot under the glove box area, and put in an activated charcoal filter in the rear slot. Filter cost is about $30. Never have a filter in both slots!
Cars that were originally equipped with IAQS have a sensor, in addition to the filter. The job of the sensor is to detect hydrocarbons (other offensive odors are NOT detected) from the incoming air, and put the system in recirculate mode, so outide incoming air is minimized. How well this really detects and works is up to the whims of Volvo software, but you could do the same thing manually with your recirculate button.

Don't sweat that you don't have it.
Laminated glass for anti-intrusion: if you are intent on having it, it can be ordered aftermarket and installed just like tint.
