Hello - My name is Jake and I have been hanging around for the past few months in anticipation of purchasing of an XC90. After 3 weeks of ownership, I though I would share some initial thoughts.
I purchased an '07 XC90 V8 AWD at the beginning of the month. The color is silver on graphite, it had 29K miles on it, and I paid $28,000 for the car with the CPO warranty. Through all the research I had done, it seems as if I had gotten a pretty good deal....matter of fact I drove 4 hours from PA to Virginia to pick the car up, b/c I was so confident about the deal. The dealer I purchased it from took over the last 2 payments on a lease we had on my wife's '07 s40 as well.
All in all, I have been extremely satisfied with the 90, and I definitely feel that we made the right choice going with this vehicle and the v8 powertrain (I averaged 20.5 mpg on the drive home ). I absolutely love the feel of the car on the road. The transmission is wonderful, the ride is superb, and knowing that the v8 is ready to explode with power at a moment's notice, all really add up to a outstanding overall package for this SUV. I look forward to many years of enjoyable experiences with the 90.
And now for the bad. In all honesty, there are not too many things to complain about, and they seem nominal at best. The biggest complaint I have is the incredibly creaky and squeaky center armrest console. Every time you touch it....it just sounds absolutely horrible! Like that of a much lower grade automobile. I am thinking of taking it to my local dealer to see if there is anything they can do about it. It really drives us nuts. The only other thing would be the massive amount of brake dust that develops in the front two wheels. I do know this is a common occurrence among volvos, but it is just a real pain having to keep on the wheels almost every day in order to keep them clean.
Otherwise the car seems wonderful so far, and as I said, we look forward to many years ahead with this great SUV. If anyone has any suggestions for my quirky problems, I would love to hear them!
Cheers,
Jake

All the volvo dealers have squeak and rattle kits. I had several areas that drove me nuts, but the dealer was great and fixed it. They have shims, silicone tape, etc. It can be fixed really easily.
Brake dust...check out the threads on ceramic brake pads.

They should pay for themselves by not consuming your rotors anywhere near as fast at the oe pads, are virtually dust free and appropriate for all passenger applications (they are oe on many Japanese cars). Search around this forum, there are plenty of converts.
Also, if I have this right, Volvo is using ceramic pads on some of its current models, too, e.g. the S80.

I installed the Akebono ceramic pads in our V8's front brakes and it is a night and day difference on brake dust! We still have the OEM pads in the rear brakes and it is amazing the difference. The front wheels look like they are brake dust free while the rear brakes have the black dusting to them. When it comes time to R&R the rear pads, it will be with ceramics!

We also just purchased our XC90 (06', 2.5T, 50K) and have very few complaints (23+ mpg hwy)
The only real issue we have is the leather seats become "sticky" after sitting in the sun. So much that they can actually pull fibers off our clothes but other than that we are very pleased.
As far as brake pads, I just replaced all for factory brake pads (notorious for being dust factories) on my Jetta GLI with Hawk HPS pads and the dusting has been amazingly reduced, not to mention the bite that they provide is great. You should check them out.

The center console is removable, which is why it becomes squeaky over time as it loses its "tautness" with its mating surface after several remove & replaces. I used foam tape on the bottom of the receiving surface and no more issues.

As far as keeping your rims clean, you can grab some wheel wax; basically a coating that will wash the brake dust off right at the car wash without any additional effort. Of course brake dust will still collect and be visible. Otherwise, ceramic brake pads will make a difference.
http://forums.swedespeed.com/z...22829

Pick up some Sil-Glide from Napa and apply it where the plastic meets the plastic on the console. I did that on my R and it's been well over a year and it's not come back yet. Just a TINY bit goes a long ways, don't goop it on.
Congrats on the purchase, I love our XC90 Sport, it's a fantastic vehicle.

Another vote for Akebono pads - they stop my V70 slightly better than the Volvo pads but the lack of brake dust is amazing. Now its my back wheels that need cleaning

Thanks for the advice on the Sli-Glide. This seems like an easy DIY that can ease much frustration for us!
As far as the akebono pads -- they seem like a must based on everyone's commnets. Looks like they are on the list too!
Thanks again,
Jake
