Hey all,

Just purchased a silver 1998 v70r with lots and lots of miles on it...car seems to be in general good shape, but as you can imagine it need some work but i'm ready to invest in it.

The main thing is the power steering - there is PS fluid dripping from the subframe so it looks like the pump is leaking...the pump is also whining quite a bit.

Any idea how big of a job the PS pump is? Can the pumps be expensive?

The pump is easy to change. Parts are $200 and up depending on if you want OEM or aftermarket. But, if fluid is leaking toward right rear of subframe it may be the rack and pinion leaking. The right seal typically goes out with high mileage or turbo cars because of heat on that side from downpipe. Check that right tie rod boot, make sure it's not full of fluid.

My rack just started leaking, 260,000 miles. I thought it ws the pump too, but was the rack. OEM rack is $650 to $1,000 depending on where purchased. AWD racks are more expensive I believe. Rack and pinion change is a bigger job than just the pump, subframe has to be dropped.
