Hey all, I've lurked around these forums soaking up a lot of the good stuff for a little while now, but now that I have a question, I figured I'd actually sign up. I got my 05 S40 T5 AWD 6-spd standard last Halloween for ~19k USD minus 3k USD trade in, and absolutely LOVE it. It's pretty much fully loaded, with the exception of the sound system. Bi-Xenon headlights, fog lights, sport package, leather, heated seats, trip computer, dual climate, etc etc. Living in the area I do, I've already had a deer try it's hand at the Volvo and the S40 won big time (1 mo in the shop, insurance covered 100%). The deer got what it had coming to it, and neither I nor my girlfriend had a scratch on us. All things considered, despite being a six point buck, the Volvo actually had very little damage done to it, but parts take forever for delivery and I happened to go to a busy body shop - hence the 1 mo wait. Basically, I don't have a single complaint about the car, and I'll put up some pics after I give it a good wash this weekend.
Anyway, to my question, I noticed that someone here actually works for a Volvo dealership and was curious if there was a TSB regarding the FMIC? I'm really debating whether to buy the Evolve FMIC and could really use the advice from either him or all the people who recently purchased it. I know it's a little early in the morning for all the West Coast guys, but can I get a little help on this? Thanks guys!

Re: New Guy, FMIC Question (Kallvin22)

I have done no mods, yet. I've been seriously considering the FMIC, and possibly 18" aluminum wheels once my Kumho Ecsta ASX 205/50/R17 wear down. They came new with the car, so it's going to be a little while. No need to get new wheels when the tires are still good.

Re: New Guy, FMIC Question (stealth)

I haven't heard of any TSB/TNN's regarding the FMIC. What are you wanting to know exactly?
You actually have 3 choices on FMIC's....
ATP $649

Bell $795

Evolve $749

I have had many.... not so plesent experiences with Evolve.

Re: New Guy, FMIC Question (mad matt)

I was curious if Volvo acknowledged that their FMIC was inferior in any way, or if it legitimately caused any long-term engine problems in prolonged hot weather / stop and go traffic. Just trying to cut through the advertising bull associated with modding cars. I don't have an enormous level disposable income at the moment.
I did notice those three companies, and tried to find a local shop to custom manufacture a FMIC (which wouldn't one-off a product). Still trying to find options beyond that.
Thanks for all the feedback so far, it's awesome to get legit help these days.

Re: New Guy, FMIC Question (stealth)

I guess I'm confused. You wanted to know what FMICs are available, but you already knew about ATP, Evolve, and Bell, and decided to make your own instead? What options beyond that are you contemplating? It seems to me to be pretty straight forward. Am I missing something? Most of the guys on here that have replaced the OEM part have used one of those 3 models, with generally good results (Evolve seems to have more naysayers than the others). The default boost levels used in the standard T5 are so low that the stock IC works fine. In fact, most on here would recommend you do a Stage 1 tune BEFORE you change the IC. What answer are you looking for?

Re: New Guy, FMIC Question (aiden)

I never asked about what different ones were available, Mad Matt was just listing the possibilities (quite nicely might I add). I was trying to ask if anyone heard anything from Volvo (TSB/TNN) about if there was something actually wrong with the original, and for those who have the Evolve, if it's any good. I'm looking for feedback from those who work for Volvo, or those who have either an ATP or Evolve. I won't buy the Bell because I'm not cutting anything on my car. I have a CPO that won't run out for a long time (debating on extending it actually).
I will be looking around my local area to see if anyone else could manufacture a custom FMIC to avoid the gouging that some companies put on Volvo mods versus say Honda mods. I just don't want to overpay for something that I could get locally at either greater quality for the same price, or equal quality for less. If I fail, I'd like to know which people have had more success with which intercooler. Hopefully that makes more sense?
Stage 1 is in the back of my mind, but those are not cheap. I'm more likely to get a strut bar and/or sway bars first.

Wait so you're asking if Volvo has said that their FMIC is inferior?
They aren't a performance company, they aren't going for the best performing so for them their intercooler is good enough...

Re: New Guy, FMIC Question (stealth)

Gotcha. Well The OEM IC is just fine when your running in stock form and yes it could of always been designed better but it won't lead to any problems. Once you start tuning the S40, then you'll be wanting a more efficient FMIC. Oh and if you think the S40's have it bad, look at we get in the S60R's, it's a joke of an IC.

Re: New Guy, FMIC Question (stealth)

Much clearer. Thank you. There are plenty of Volvo sales guys on here, and a few have changed out their air box and IC. From what I understand the Bell mod is minimal cutting on the front bumper, but I can also relate to not wanting to do any cutting on the car at all. Unfortunately you're looking at a market that charges what it can get, and FMICs and tuning are not cosmetic changes like new metal foot pedals. It's all about volume, and Honda and other ricer brands have SO many legions of buyers available that their volume is much higher than Volvo / Saab etc... thus the manufacturing is cheaper, thus the price is lower as well. If you're patient, you can catch a group buy on here or even the C30world.com forum.
