I'm interested in replacing the exhaust system on my 1800ES with something a little bigger, something that breathes better (partly in preparation for whatever future mods I may take on.) I'm open to suggestion as to size, single tip vs. dual, etc. I would like to get away from the skinny S-curved pipes that came stock with the car, though.
Can anyone suggest a good configuration? Ideally, something that preserves the metallic blat-blat-blat sound, and maybe gives a little more bass but without getting louder.
The great thing is, I don't have to worry about emissions regulations, so no cat!

Do you just want to replace the exhaust, or the manifold too? Vintage Performance Developments sells performance headers of all types for the OHV engines. KG Tuning in Sweden also sells a lot of Volvo performance parts, and I'm almost certain they will have a variety of exhaust manifolds.
As for the rest of the exhaust, I suggest you contact VPD and find out what they recommend. It depends if you change the manifold or not, but a 2.25" mandrel bent single muffler exhaust could perform very well and sound throaty and deep if you choose a good muffler. However, I don't have any muffler suggestions.

Re: New exhaust for an 1800 (Turbo16psi)

Yeah, I found a picture of the look I want from the tips (borrowed from volvo1800pictures.com):

I think I want the tri-Y manifold from http://www.v-performance.com, but what concerns me is that I don't know enough about exhaust systems to figure out what to do between the manifold and tips. Should I get something custom made? Are mandrel bends worth the cost? What to do about mufflers? The original setup (two mufflers and a resonator?) sounds like overkill to me.
What inspired this, was when my mechanic found a couple of holes in the existing system. They're nothing major, but it warrants replacing some stuff. And if I intend to do a little work on the engine later on, I might as well have a more free-breathing exhaust system, right?

Sounds like a logical next step to me!
I wonder how that will sound too? I think you'll enjoy that.
