I had my 00 R I'm selling in for a service. They did the recall flash upgrade.
I really thought that this may slow these cars down, au contraire, it's much quicker and much smoother now.
This is on an UNmodified ECU, apparanty it will wipe out your ipd, BSR, etc. flash

Re: New ETM (ECU) upgrade flash (JRL)

Jim,
Is this the new software upgrade for all the effected ECU's? Mine was just replaced a few months ago and at that time the dealer here didn't have the new software. I will call him to find out. Thanks for the info.

Re: New ETM (gs1397)

Yes it is.
They are reflashing ALL 99's thru 01's, ALL cars whether the ECU is good or bad.
STOCK cars only, modded (ECU's) ones are overwritten and they will lose the extra hp

Less movement in one spot on the mylar potentiometer creates more digging into it, ultimately ruining the pick-up area for the ETM signal. The new program allows a fuller use of the mylar, by having the metal fingers move a greater distance across it. This in turn helps the piece which is ultimately going to fail regardless, last longer.

Re: New ETM (MadeInJapan)

The way my service manager explained it to me he said it hardly moves at all now, works more like a mechanical throttle body
All I know is I picked up the 00 R I have yesterday and marveled how fast it was.
(had become )
Paid the bill today and there it was, ETM upgrade performed.
No new plugs or anything beyond an oil change and some other non engion related things and it feels SIGNIFICANLY quicker and smoother.
This R has an ipd exhaust and a CAI and it is THE fastest stock (pre 01) Volvo I have ever driven, (by far).
Faster than my T5 when it was stock and faster than my 850R.
It may have a few more hp but it weighs MUCH more, I'm VERY surprised.

Glad the upgrade was good for you. Boy, there's a bunch of peeved individuals with upgraded ECU's over on Volvospeed who had theirs unknowingly done when they took their Volvo's in for other service. Apparently the new upgrade over-writes their codes....

Re: (JRL)

I'll let you know how my R feels like after the ECU flash. I'm fully stock (unless you count a K&N filter as a significant mod) at the moment.
Car should be going in next week to the dealer. Will report afterwards.
Re: (Volvo Grrrr)

Found out today that this is DEFINITELY and ETM AND an ECU reflash. It WILL wipe out previous programming.
It is also a federal recall so unless you make it VERY clear that your ECU is reflashed it WILL be done automatically if taken to a Volvo dealer

Re: (JRL)

You are right JRL.
This is Recall 155. Cars must be checked at the dealer thru VRC2.
The software is intended for ECM/ETM

Re: (854T5)

Well, my car was at the dealer for regular service. The ETM update was not on my service order but the service advisor did state that the tech performed all Volvo updates via VIDA.
My car doesn't feel much different honestly. My car was already smooth prior to taking her in and I don't feel a noticeable difference in speed/torque. Maybe I didn't get it?
If the update was done, should it be on the Service order or not?

Re: (Volvo Grrrr)

My dealer checks recalls for every car that comes in for service.
If they performed the recall it should be on your work order.
The recalls are checked on the Warranty Inquiry screen thru Vrc2.
Depends on the Dealer/Advisor i suppose.

Folks,
My experience totally different. The car is running like crap since the upgrade.
However, got some good feedback from my service writer and the service manager this morning. The flash upgrade deletes any and all adaptations that the ECU may have developed over time. It does not erase any other software or d/l that may have been loaded. (for instance, I was assured that my software settings on the tranny to avoid neutral shift out would not be overridden).
In any case, I'm going to give some time for my car to re-adapt before I pronounce final judgement on the quality of driveability of my car on the new software.
Anyone know the recommended method to perfrom adaptation or the "Emmissioin Readiness Drive Cycle" on the P2's?

Re: New ETM (ECU) upgrade flash (Matt S.)

Any chance the ECU relates to the ECM? My V70 is at the Volvo dealer as we speak. They've performed the ETM upgrade but are charging me for an ECM software upgrade, to the tune of $166.48!!! Apparently I had a leak in an elbow vacuum hose, and the code is saying I need the upgrade. This would be two upgrades--one that they're doing under warranty, the other at my cost.
Should I be paying for both?
Sincerely,
Sleepless in San Diego (because I'm worried about putting in another ETM)

A vacuum hose leak needs a computer upgrade?
I have some swamp land in Florida but it's on fire...will you take it off of my hands real cheap??

I had the local stealer (Bridgewater Volvo in NJ) try to charge me for programming the key to my '98 V70 XC. It's a non-chipped key, and can't be programmed!

The really bad part is, all three of the dealers in my area are owned by the same group (Bridgewater, Princeton, and Edison). I'll never take my car to Bridgewater again. They're rude, they're obnoxious, and they over-charge. They wanted $600 for a front brake job on my car. And that was just pads and rotors. I did front pads and rotors (Zimmerman/Mintex), rear pads and rotors (Zimmerman/Mintex), and front Bilstein HD struts for <$500 in parts, and about 3 hours of my time. That's probably $1500 - $2000 worth of work at Bridgewater Volvo.
Those people are thieves!
