After topping off the coolant for the second time, not finding any leaks, noticing an odd smelling exhaust, and using the ‘search is your friend’ option to no avail, I made a service appointment and was shocked at what they found:
The engine block had a manufacturing defect in cylinder #4 and was seeping coolant. It was the first time the service department had heard of this issue; they took pictures, notified the Volvo overlords, and ordered a new engine under warranty. Head tech said it’s worth $15K, I assume that’s with labor included?
Anything I should be worried about? Resale? Numbers matching? Any feedback appreciated – thanks!
Mandatory shameless R promotion picture included.

The only thing I would worry about is the handful of bolts always leftover after an engine swap
Mileage is kept in more than one module for redundancy and reference. It would be too easy to replace a ECM to roll the miles back to zero if that were the case.
Vehicle mileage is whats monitored not engine.

You're a very lucky dude for them to replace your motor with the IPD ECU loaded in the engine.

Re: New engine @ 25K miles! (FightR)

i just had a new engine installed by the dealer here in Tucson about a month ago, at 36,000 miles - was consuming oil for no good reason, no leaks. unfortunately i'm no mechanic so i never did get a straight answer out of them when i asked exactly what the problem was, but i did get a new engine (block only). saw it brand new in the crate from Sweden! i've had to take it back in once to get the subframe tightened back up and the A/C tweaked, but other than that it's all broken in and running fine. "new" car for me!
