I read on another site that the new coupe is to be built on the Focus platform. Are they crazy? Focus is a small narrow car getting it's room from being tall. Building a coupe on it will result in a small car to compete with Eclipse/Prelude/ and a host of others. Even the accura coupe is bigger, I think.
Why do they not build it on the existing S60/S80 platform to compete with BMW 330Ci and Mercedes coups? How about the new Infinity that looks odd to me? Also they will have to build the convertible on that platform as well, resulting in an even smaller car inside.

I really do not understand continuing the convertable on the old 850 platform, which has been an orphan fior several years now. The only reason that makes sense is that it is a good seller and still makes money.

Well, this is the biggest enigma for me and I have been trying my hardest to find out what the truth is. Through my Swedish contacts, I have heard the same but in meetings here in the US, they assure us that the next Coupe (which will actually be a convertible with a foldable HARD top, like the Lexus SC430, Mercedes SLK320, etc.) will be only slightly smaller than the current C70...We shall see!

As cool as the folding hardtop idea is, I hope they do a fixed hard top coupe as well. The SLK is HEAVY and so too will be the C40 if that's the only option available. That kills it for sporting series like DTM and Speed Challenge.

We've also confirmed with our sources that the C is going to be P1/Focus based. Bear in mind, this new platform is going to be quite different from the current platform the Focus now uses. It has been engineered for use at Mazda, Volvo and Ford.

As for the new Focus platform, there are a couple of things to consider. First, generally most cars grow as they evolve from platform generation to platform generation. Second, knowing more about the flexibility of upcoming VW platforms, I'd imagine that Ford is making the P1 to be flexible in size. Keep in mind they're planning a Ford-based MPV on that platform as well.

Second, it's been pretty much confirmed by every magazine that Ford is working on a new Capri for Europe... an upscale coupe also based on the Forcus platform (maybe to be seen as a Merc in the US?). Even though they'll probably share little "seen" components, such as body panels or even window glass, the Capri and the C40 could share expensive components such as suspension arms, etc. that will help FoMoCo keep costs down on both vehicles.

On fighting squarely with Bimmer, I don't see a need. Keep in mind that the CLK and upcoming Audi A4 coupe also both play in that crowded arena. The C70 has been a slow seller for Volvo. Bringing it down a notch in size and hopefully price (built on cheaper P1 platform), will possibly mean larger volume in sales.

Also keep in mind that this platform will have Haldex and 5cyl motor availability, so you're likely to find the C40 similarily outfitted to the S60 in equipment levels.

Hey that describes the S60 which is slightly smaller than the 850 platform on which the C70 is built. Why would they substitute a more or less unknown platform for the S80/S60 one used now and that has gotten great reviews from journalists?
I was really concerned about the small size of the Focus because I am tall. Anything smaller than a S60 will not do. I drove the BMW 33Ci but it is a small car. Too small.

Perhaps I do not understand just what a platform really is. I thought it was a floorpan with engine/suspension pickups and other details. The structure welded to it provides an already tested crash management solution. Taking an existing Focus platform and lengtning/widening it, then welding on a new untested body structure does not seem to be the same thing.

Maybe the question of what is a platform is a whole different topic. I see a S60 as a slightly shorter and a tad narrower S80 with coupe styling. Why not just revise it slightly into a two door?

No...the C40 will definitely not be a 2-door version of the current S60. It will have more genes crossed with the redesigned S40 rather than the current S60 (although it will not be a 2-door version of the new S40).

And the engines that will outfit this car are promising, based on my sources. There will be three variants of th3 I-5 cyl. engine... http://********************/smile/emwink.gif And, naturally, both FWD and AWD versions.

Aside from all that, the two most exciting cars that I am EAGERLY awaiting for (besides the S60R/V70R) are going to be the C40 AWD and XC50!
