just curious about those who have installed aftermarket coils (i.e. blue from IPD). where and how do you go about cutting through the armored cable; at the base of the coil, the base of the ign. switch or anywhere in the middle?? i was also looking at the diode kit, but i figure you have to cut the old coil out anyway. just looking for some feed back, thanks guys (and gals)

The whole point of the diode kit is that it lets you keep the original coil and armored cable intact, no cutting necessary. It's usually used for installing breakerless ignition, but I see no reason you couldn't power a new coil with it too.

If you do want to cut the cable, anywhere along its length will do. Just be sure you don't also cut into the wire that's inside...

right, i think i will cut it anyway. however how do you then remove the old coil if it is attached without cutting the wire inside the cable? i am sure i am making this harder than it should be.

The new coil won't mount like the original in any case, so you have to find a different place for it. You can leave the original in place, or remove it (three small bolt, I think) and make some sort of cover for the hole that would leave.

Volvostud (Matt) just finished his '68 Amazon wagon (Eugene) coil/ignition install in Austin, Texas, and all went very smoothly.

The ipd blue coil was used along with the XR700 ignition. Matt removed the old coil at the firewall and found enough slack to cut through the hollow armored cable with a cordless power dremel-like tool.

You will find that removing the entire ignition switch will allow you to pull it, the coil and cable free of the car all as one unit. Matt's Amazon has AC so he chose to leave the ignition switch in place and made the first cut of the cable close to the coil without concern for the inner wire. (Note: cut cable has sharp edges!). This freed the coil from the cable then he made a second cut a few inches "above" the first but did not cut the inner wire thus allowing slack for an electrical splice (+ wire on new coil). Using a modified aftermarket coil moint and a fabricated rubber seal he mounted the new coil in same place as the old using the original bolts. He mounted the XR700 control unit under the dash and ran the wires out to the engine side through the existing harness openings in the firewall.

While it may not look stock, why not take the coil and switch out and replace just the switch with one from an autoparts store? You'll even gain and acessory position!

this worked amazingly well. however if anyone has any feedback on what aftermarket switch they used (and are happy with it) let me know. i got a $10 one from Pepboys and the Accessory position works fine, but when i go to turn it on i first put it in the Run position and my starter jumps, then I crank it and it catches and run fine. That is not all that bad but its when i go to turn it off, in between the run and off position the starter bumps again and makes that awful grinding noise (we all know what it sounds like). maybe my wiring job is at fault. however the switch itself seems funky, but hey, it was only $10.

Did you save the original switch?

Look at the back of it.

Well, guess what - they don't jive with the key's position and don't even "light up" in sequence as you turn the key.

The new switch must have "OFF", "ACC", "ON" and "START" positions just as the old switch but they need not be in the same sequence as the old switch.

When you connected the original ignition switch wires to the new switch did you "stack" more than one wire to any connection?

Do you have a wiring diagram?
