Re: new Alpine IVA-W200 in the R (ilalocal1922)

Cool. Best HU out there from what I have read...what options did you get?
If I did not have factory Nav I would have scored this with everything, Nav. BT, Ipod...the works.

Things are getting crazy with these units. you can get different size HD's and everything built right in and downlaod thing from your home computer while your car is parked in the garage, lol.

as for now just the radio but plan on building around it: Alpine 5ch amp, XM, mids and highs.. but this radio was a pain in the @ss to play DVDs you have to tap the brake 3times then pull the E-brake just to get to the DVD player and even the menu to set the clock. Just bought the Black Box off E-bay and it tricks the HU to think I have done all that. But still playing with it and loving it!!

Can you still utilize your steering wheel controls with that unit?
Looks nice. The spot where the cubby hole used to be looks barren though.

My installer wired my Alpine with a switch I activate with a couple brake touches and a flick of a switch. Hidden really well. I didn't even ask for this feature.
I hate how the Alpine user interface is absolute crap. Looks like a DOS application. They need someone from Apple helping them out with their GUI.

Should have been clear, Best Nav unit on the market bar none! Plus Alpine makes great stuff.
The Kenwood has average graphics, the Pioneer very good...I just wish they had the Alpine quality. Of course I'm not buying one so what do I know.

Kenwoods flip screen is better than any other flip on the markey. If you are going for the HD/PC then Eclipse wins hands down. You people are not comparing apples to apples here. this Alpine is the best for the money but the street price is like 700-800 bucks for it. It is not fair to put it in the ring with something that cost twice as much!

Can it drive the speakers on the dash? I guess I don't know how these speakers on the dash are wired to the head unit.
Re: (fstshrk)

Most of these units have outputs only for a center channel. You would need to buy a low-wattage, single-channel amp to drive the center (the HU-803 has a small built-in amp for this speaker, while the other speakers are routed through the factory amp). Kenwood makes a speaker/amp combo that sells for around $150.
- Tryg

There is no way to directly tie the steering wheel controls into the new head unit, because each button sends a unique signal through shared wiring. Does this make sense?
I'll dig through the old posts to see if I can dig up the link to the company that sells the device.
- Tryg

Clarion option

The audio nuts will probably jump on me for this, but...
I'm looking to purchase the new Clarion MX-675 unit for myself next Christmas. It fits the double-din opening and sports a full 7-inch touchscreen. I think most, if not all, of the fixed-screen systems currently on the market have 6.5-inch screens. This unit has a built-in tuner and DVD player, but you can then customize it with a variety of other options (HD navigation w/ voice recognition, satellite radio, digital jukebox w/ SD slot, CD changer, Ipod, TV, extra monitors, rear camera, etc.). The aluminum on matte black is also a nice match for the R's interior and the backlighting is blue, too. I haven't tried out their new GUI and navigation software, but it is supposed to be vastly improved and also much faster. Here's a link to the MX-675 on Clarion's website:
http://www.clarion.com/us/en/p....html
I've owned Clarion stereos in the past and was always happy with their performance - I hope they are still building decent equipment. I must admit I might purchase this over the competition on looks alone. Plus, I prefer to blow my bucks on home audio equipment. Less wind noise to worry about, for one.

Radio reception is subjective, my Alpine untits have out-performed my Kenwood & Pioneer units.
As I said, Alpine has the best Nav on the market HANDS DOWN...none of the brands you mentioned is even close to the new Alpine Nav. Also the add-on modules are better in the Alpine lineup including ipod, BT and Digital surround.

My only problem with a double DIN video screen system is that it pretty much screams 'STEAL ME' to anybody looking in the windows. I mean, these guys are sophisticated enough to be able to recognize the fold and flip out screen types as desirable, so the big screen is that much more of a temptation.
Then again, I've gotten into the bad habit of leaving my iPod out. I guess I'm just asking for someone to test out that laminated glass option.

But remember that this one is not as expensive either. For most people this unit is a good fit because they will not use alot of the more advanced features found on other units out there.
This unit has LESS pixels (280,800 vs. 336,960) than the others mentioned and does NOT have 5.1 capability. Also you don't have dual zone controls. These are not the only differences. Please do some reseach before you say one product is the "best" out there.
I don't hardly listen to the radio but I know that I had problems in the past with alpine reception that were fixed when I went to clarion. Alpine is notorious for this btw. If you want the "best" then get the Alpine F1 status (if you can find it). F1 status might as well be a whole other company as it is in a league of it's own for quality. For features Kenwood has that locked up right now with Pioneer being a close second and when you get into HD's and such Eclipse has the market.
