So the last 2 times I've started up the R I've gotten a weird message in the dash, "FUEL FILLER CAP OPEN-LOOSE" which I have never seen before. First time I saw it I figured it would be an easy fix, so I checked the cap, tightened it up and thought it'd be ok. But the message stayed on next time I started up my car. I checked the cap again, and made sure it was extra tight. This morning I was excited to see the message was gone. Then the CEL came on.
I'm guessing the two are related and that I have some sort of leak in the fuel system. The big question is, I have a 6 hour road trip today; will it leave me stranded?
Also, any way the thumping behind my wheel well could be related? Any fuel system components up there? http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=122726

If it infact is a minor evap leak as your message indicates it won't leave you stranded.
Your CEL is likely related to the message you had, but like all cel's, get your codes pulled or invest in the PPC so you can do it and get definitions of codes yourself.

Re: Never seen that message before...and CEL (djkronik57)

There is an ECM software update to address this issue that fixes it half the time.
The other half the time its a bad DLP (Diagnotic Leak Pump) for the EVAP system monitor that the software is supposed to fix.

But after trying the ECM update at least once or twice over past year (worked for a while), and having some other fuel related issues repaired (fuel pump, fuel pressure sensor, PEM Control unit), my dealer finally replaced the leak diagnostic pump (codes ECM-433B and ECM-439C). Labor and parts for just the leak diagnostic pump were about $233. Total for a host of things (the above plus other stuff found and fixed while in for repairs) over the past month about $3400. Luckily I have the VIP warranty which has easily paid for itself now - so just had to worry about the deductable

Re: Never seen that message before...and CEL (superstein61)

We used to just replace the pump under warranty but Volvo in their infinet wisdom made the DLC a restricted part for warranty return. They said their software would fix it. Well its hard for software to fix a leaking pump. Seriously the older DLC pumps were of a snap together case and they would leak. The updated pumps were at least plastic welded together to reduce the chance of a leak. The few cars that the software fixed will likely make it out of warranty to only have the pump replaced by the customer's wallet in the end.

Re: (firehawk618)

Well crap. They just did the software fix. There's no way I can get them to fix the pump? My warranty runs out next March...don't want to be stuck with the bill because Volvo wanted to do a quick patch job.

Re: (Needsdecaf)

I just had this last Friday. Got a CEL as I went out for lunch.
A quick trip to BVV and a new ~$20 gas cap fixed the problem.
Try a new gas cap first, the seal begins to crack and leaks.
I have driven over 200 miles now and no CEL.
Now that I've typed this I'll get a CEL on my way home tonight
If the gas cap doesn't fix it for you, try to clean the electrical connector on the DLP. Corrosion here can sometimes cause the CEL. If it's not fixed after this then it's the pump.

Re: (S60R1)

Well they claimed they did a software upgrade (specific words were "a software upgrade to the ECM"), but on the invoice it says they installed a new gas cap. So...I really have no idea what the heck they did, but I'm a little more inclined to trust the invoice than the service writer. Maybe they did both? Hopefully this was the only issue and I won't have an expensive repair down the road. Thanks for your help guys!
