Hey guys.
I posted a while back about swapping HU-803 radios after my son decided to use it for a piggy bank. I picked up a HU-803 from a wrecked 01 but it's grey colour. The MY04 it's replacing is graphite black. Couple of issues:
1. A straight out wap works great. Cept the steering wheel controls don't work. I'm guessing a VIDA reprogram will fix that.
2. When I tried my MY04 HU-803 faceplate (black) on the MY01 HU-803, it's dead. I can hear it power up, but the faceplate won't work.
Questions:
1. Does issue 1 require a Dealer visit, or would a visit to an INDE with a VIDA fix it?
2. I thought that a HU-803 is a HU-803. Why are the face-plates incompatible? Or did I miss something simple? Or does it require a VIDA reprogram?
Any help/insight would be appreciated.

Supposedly you cannot swap in a used radio with these cars
And you will have to take it to the dealership for Software
HOWEVER, I tried to upgrade from HU-613 to a used HU-803 and I contacted my local dealer, they said it could be possible but they would have to do all the work

Yeah, I figured that a dealer visit would be required to reset the steering wheel controls. But what I can't understand is why the newer faceplate won't work on the same model of radio. Weird.

Re: (forkster)

Called my local dealership and spoke with a tech. According to him, the HU-803 radios are VEHICLE SPECIFIC - meaning that if the unit died, the only alternative is to purchase a NEW and UNUSED HU radio from Volvo. They cannot reprogram it.
I need to find a way to confirm this - maybe a different Volvo dealership like Erie Volvo? JRL might have someone I could speak to.
Either way, it seems that if the radio dies, aftermarket is the only option - talk about a very 'UNGREEN' and non-environmental solution. I should be able to swap out units from a different Volvo. That is all I really want to do.

My steering wheel controls work just fine.
I personally had the "radio removal" code down loaded before I swapped out my 613 for the 803 (my donnor was a 04 VR). The vadis code makes the car think there is no radio, so it does not query for any security codes. The result is a radio swap is plug and play.
help note: if you had posted in the audio forum, Mr Tippy would have helped you long ago.

I threw a "hissy" fit after they told me the sound was normal. I dragged my S/A out to another '04R on their used lot (happened to be Barry's Sharp's old R) and... sure enough... no hiss. When I picked up my car later that week, the S/A proudly told me they had installed THAT car's head unit in my car. </rant>

My point: Any used HU-803 CAN be reprogrammed and installed in another car if similarly equipped (i.e., premium audio).
~ Trygve
Thanks for the responses guys. I'm going to try another Hu-803 - this one will be from a 04-V70R.
