Wife is out of town with the 2000 S70 GLT.... She just called, and apparently the check engine light is on, and there is a smell of gas.
Feel pretty helpless with her 300 miles away, but she is in her hometown of Atlanta, so I think we know of good mechanics in the area.
Anyone run into this?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Bryan

Did she put the gas cap back on and tighten it after she last filled up?

Re: !!!Need help diagnosing please.... (Mk1Racer)

Thanks for the suggestion Mk1Racer. I actually filled it myself before her trip, and "thought" I turned it til clicked. I had her tighten it as a precautionary measure.
Something I did not include in the original post: the service light has been on for about 4 days, but we thought that it was an indicator of oil change/tune up/preventative maint....like in my 3 series. It tells you whether you want to know or not. We had the 70k service done 3 months ago, car has about 73k on it now.

Anything else it could be if not the gas cap? Was thinking along the lines of O2 sensor and so on...but who knows. I told her that if the 'red' light comes on, pull over immediately and kill it, then call AAA.
I know she's miles from you but have her take it to a, local to her, autozone to get the codes read, and have her write them down. If she asks nicely, they will also reset them for her. Could be just the gas cap issue, so have her tighten it...several clicks, not just one. It will take some driving for the car to turn off the CEL even if this is the issue. You gave her good info about the red light but I wouldn't wait for that...if temp. goes 3/4 on the scale, I'd turn it off and have it towed. A lot of times, by the time the red light comes on, it's to late.

need more info, smell of gas and CEL isn't much help. The service soon light has nothing to do with anything other than change your oil and you can turn that light off yourself. Does the car run rough? Does it run at all? Is it sluggish? Is the ETS light on?

Re: (JRL)

Greg, No more info known as she is in Atlanta, and I am in NC....but, no other problems were reported, not to say that they can not evolve in the next few days.
thanks to all for your responses... We will have it checked out at a reputable private Volvo service shop Monday and see what comes of it.
I just thought that the problem may have beeen encountered before, as I am new to the brand.

It would help with further diagnostics if the CEL persists.
However, the reason I said to reset them is because if there's a problem, the CEL will light up again and set the codes back anyway. DTC's that don't come back may be a fluke or an intermittent problem. With some issues, if the code can be reset but isn't, having the code set in the ECU itself may limit drivability. However, with this specific situation, that does not seem to be an issue.

Re: (gdogg16)

She said there were no other symptoms, just the odor of gas....sooooooo
Hoping like hell the CEL resets after she fiddled with the gas cap. If not, we'll shoot into a local Volvo shop for a diagnosis.
I was going to suggest resetting the codes as well, as it will throw again if there is another/remaining issue. Granted, I am thinking BMW here and applying it to Volvo, so we'll see.
The one thing I keep going over in my mind: I have driven for days without a gas cap before (stolen a few times several years ago), and there was never an odor... keep thinking it would have to be fuel pump related or a leak of some kind. Probably over thinking it....
