Hello Everyone,
This is the first time that I've posted to these boards, but I figured that you guys would be the best to ask. I am trying to replace my 90 Chev Lumina becuse it is ready to die on me. I looked at an 850 Turbo the other night and loved it! It drove great, and was in great condition. It was a 1995. The big problem was that it had a TON of miles on it... 160k He was asking $5900 which is very below the TMV according to edmunds.com. I am a college student, and I don't want to buy a car that is going to crap out in two years, and I have always heard that volvos will go forever. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Greg Andrews

I don't know much about the 850 series of volvos, but my mom's '91 945 has 178k miles on it, and its about to die. 178k miles is a LOT on a 4 cylinder and I don't think we have ever replaced the turbo. Even though the 850 is 5 cylinder, it has pretty high miles. I am sure you can find another one with less miles or find a 940.
I am sure you might know about these sites, but here are some links to internet postings of used cars. http://www.autotrader.com http://www.cars.com and http://www.carsdirect.com

[This message has been edited by omega6_virus (edited 06-11-2002).]

There's a guy with a non-watercooled 740 turbo with over 100K MORE miles than what you mentioned (290K miles, I think).
Always look for frequent oil changes and strict maintenance on turbo cars with a lot of miles. At 160K, that 850 Turbo could go another 50K+, or it could need a turbo soon. Have it checked by a Volvo mechanic.
