We've had our V70 for about 6 months now. There is no cigarette lighter or similar. It has a 12 volt instead. I cannot plug a cell phone charger or any other device, like a tv into it. Is there a converter I need to make it work? What is it called? Where would I get it? Any help would be great. About to make a trip and NEED the TV for the kids!

Re: need converter for interior 12 volt (gallogirl)

Of course you can.
The "12V' outlet is the cigarette lighter outlet, radar outlet, phone outlet, etc.
Go ahead, plug and play, everything will work http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Re: need converter for interior 12 volt (JRL)

I hear you and it's not working. The plugs don't fit in the 12v space. I know I'm not crazy. My husband has even tried (and he's very handy). Are you sure there is no converter for it. If there is, what would it be used for otherwise. Should I assume that the 12v doesn't work, then???? Really confused, but thanks!

Sure they do.
I don't know what your husband is trying to plug in but that "12v" outlet next to the ashtray is for a cigarette lighter, a phone charger and anything else (accesory wise) that plugs into that size socket.
You say it doesn't fit or nothing works?
You may just need a new socket, they DO go bad and often.
No, there is no "converter"

Just in case....
Of course a 110Volt plug won't fit in there...it has 2 prongs...you need one that is for 12Volts and is round. If you need an "inverter" for a 110Volt TV, etc., then you need something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Vector-350...wItem

Mr. LLLL....

You're gonna scare away the newbies with your irascibility. Everbody starts somewhere. BTW, Where's the dang picture?

Gallogirl (like the wine?), depending on your model of V70 (JRL's better at this than I) you may have three 12V receptacles: one ahead and to the right of the shift lever, one facing the rear seat in the center console and one in the panel below the passenger side window in the rearmost compartment. All three should have 12V power. Plug in a cellphone charger for a car or other common 12V device (a round "male" plug, usually with a spring-loaded plunger on the end) and see if the receptacles work If not, refer to your Owner's Manual for the location of the fuses that relate to the inop ones. You gotta start somewhere.

Ms. Gallo, ever hear the one about "bark...worse...than...bite"?

Come back anytime.

Re: (JRL)

Okay....we are not idiots! My husband is an electrical engineer for the power company. Did you really think I was trying to plug in a 2 prong plug??? I thought I had read somewhere that there was something you had to buy from VOLVO to convert, which wouldn't surprise me. Anyway, I'm going to assume that it has gone bad, but there are 2 in the car and neither work. Is that normal? I'll just call Volvo and find out what the deal is. I thought maybe someone else had this problem. Sorry to bother you with such a "stupid" question.

sorry, I wasn't trying to offend. Now that maybe I "know" you a bit better, I could retract my post....but we've had all types of folks post here...thus, my interlude statement, "Just in case..."

...and just in case, just try using a cigarette lighter, (you can borrow one from somewhere) If it doesn't work, the receptacles are bad

Re: (Steely)

I gave a satellite receiver to a friend at work. She told me several days later it wouldn't work with her 12V outlet. Another friend (quite technically competent) looked and agreed.

I went to her car and showed her that one had to simply push a "little" harder to get it to work. She was quite embarrased!

The "take-away" from this story is that often the spring clips on new 12V plugs can be quite firm and require more force than one thinks would be necessary to insert them into the socket.

BTW, her car was a Subaru, so it's not a Volvo specific issue.

Re: need converter for interior 12 volt (gallogirl)

In my V70'01 most connectors would not work unless you press them firmly and/or turn them until you find the connection to work, usually ending in an unstable connection while you drive ( actually in order to avoid it, I pass the cable thru the pen holder to keep stable while driving ). Generally the cell phone connectors only have two thin contacts on the side of the plug that probably have to match with the probably thin contacts of the socket. In terms of simplyfing the issue, borrow a tester/meter to your husband and try to find which internal part of the socket has the positive and negative contacts and then if they match with your accesory connectors. Probably they socket is bent internally.

Re: (gallogirl)

This may be a long shot, but I've bought a couple of 12v accessories that came with a plastic ring or sleeve on the plug. Tried like heck to get them to fit, and then realized I needed to remove the sleeve first.
And it's true, you really have to push hard!
Good luck!

Re: (JerryP)

Thanks for the info...I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be the case, because we bought it used, and I can't imagine they had never used it. But, if they couldn't figure it out either, maybe they left it alone, so I'll check. Thanks again.
