First I should say, I really want to buy a Volvo wagon; however my budget is lacking.
I only have $10k to spend unfortunately. However, I don't know which model / years would be best?
I'm looking for reliability above all else. I don't mind (and actually prefer) the standard natural aspirated engine. I don't care at all about speed. My main reason for wanting a Volvo is comfort and safety.
Can anyone recommend a model to me? I would greatly appreciate it

Welcome to Swedespeed, Nigel.
For well under your budget you can have a perfect one-owner Volvo wagon from the '92-94 RWD era - 245, 745 and 945.
These are 4-cylinder, safe, economical and durable to the extreme.
Even the perfect ones go for under $5,000.
How far will you travel from Lombard IL for the ideal wagon?
George Dil
Temple, Texas, USA.

I know I should probably expand that since we are in the snow belt. How many miles is one likely to get out of those cars?

Thank you very much. I have to see if we can trade in our car / sell it to a dealership first. But then I would very much like to get a Volvo wagon. These are some of the most comfortable cars I've ever been in.

In Chicago, you should have no problem finding various 850 or V70 models for $10K.

My experience is that it takes $1000 - $1500 at an independent mechanic to bring a car up to acceptable condition.
Step 1 - Find an independent Volvo mechanic.
Step 2 - Study lots of used car ads in various places.
Step 3 - Make sure you get a pre-purchase inspection done by the mechanic.
Step 4 - After purchase, spend the money to put the car into excellent mechanical condition.
I think you can buy one for no more than $7K and end up with a total of maybe $8.5K invested. I got a great 850 Turbo wagon for about that less than a year ago.

Most excellent advice on how to buy a used Volvo. Never buy w/o an independent inspection from a competent Volvo mechanic.
