Hey folks,
Can't figure this out. I have 2004 S60R GT, 44K miles. Recently started having a kind of groan from the front end when making lower speed sharp turns. I feel this more than hear it through the steering wheel. Almost like a groan or grind noise, like a differential is out of whack or something??
Took it to the dealer for oil change and had them check it out. They say it is my tires rubbing. I disagree, I know what a tire rubbing feels like and while this is similar, it is not quite the same. Plus I've had these wheels and tires on for over a year and the issue is very recent. Also, the groan happens when the wheel is turned sharp, but no where near full lock, which is what is needed to get the tires close to touching the wheel well liner.
Any thoughts or advice on what to check out?
Thanks!

Re: Need advice - drivetrain groan/noise (atl36)

PS pump or rack has my money - both fairly common problems.
It sounds like a strained "groan" or "moan" from the engine/front end. You'd hear it moreso when not moving.
PS fluid could also be low, or there could be a loose or torn hose on the return that could be sucking air into the system.

I've had PS reservoir replaced and my rack. Things are nice and quiet now.

Re: Need advice - drivetrain groan/noise (Needsdecaf)

Great, thanks for the advice. I'll check it out this weekend. I can dig around see if the PS system looks faulty, but is there any way to check the rack other than taking it to a mechanic?
Thanks.

Check the PS reservoir for leaks through the seam on the plastic and around the hoses. This may explain a low fluid condition. These reservoirs come and go more often than they should. I don't know how to check the rack itself, sorry
