Need a little advice..looking at a '99 V70 GLT

Hello...I am looking at purchasing this '99 and wondered if anyone has experience with replacing computers successfully and if 3rd party programming is an option. The owner stated issues with the cruise control, all the lights lighting up on the dash, and " it would occasionally stop shifting out of high gear so if you started off from a stop it would be kind of bogged down" . Speedometer would stop working as well he said.

Do all these things sound like the ECU? I'm not familiar with how complex this fix is and don't want to bury myself in problems. Any advice would be appreciated for those that have some knowledge of this problem.

Thank you.

Not likely the ECU. I would guess they are not related...transmission problem and a wiring issue in the dash.

If that car is a non-turbo car I would pass, they are underpowered. I had one, they aren't great,

It's pretty, and all and the price seems decent (plus low miles) but you're likely getting into a headache.
LOTS of good cars out there that don't have this set of issues to contend with.
If you can get it to a Volvo specialist and they think it's decent and easy to save, then maybe lowball.
Solid, comfy and safe cars.

Its a Turbo. IF i remember correctly, on 99's and newer you cannot swap out the ECU from another car. They are VIN specific to the car and the immobilizer. Its a very nice wagon for 1500 if you can get the issues sorted. At 97K its gonna need a timing belt replaced soon.

The ABS modules die on these. Rebuilds readily available. $100ish. Easy to change.

Everything related to speed is routed through it. Can cause speedo issues, kill cruise control, kill odometer, assorted other issues.

this^, 99.99% most likely.
I've used Module Masters a couple times for this, they're great, and there's a dude in FL that does it good and cheap that people here like.
R&R is a very easy DIY.

Edit:
I ran the Autocheck on it, and it's clean - AND it's been a California car its entire life
This thing is very likeable. That 2.4 low-pressure turbo is one of the most solid motors they ever put out, plenty of grunt. Reskin the driver's seat for chump change, or duct-tape it. The rest of the car is pretty damn nice (except that he used the front spoiler as a parking stop )
You could get a PPI to find out for sure, but for that kind of money, (me being me) I'd probably roll the dice that it's simply the ABS module.
Tell the guy, "I want the car, but OMG, a whole dang 'puter??!!! That will be 'spensive!! I'll give you $700." See if he'll bite ;)
Would make a great DD. :)

I had my ABS module rebuilt from Midwest ABS in Michigan. It was 100.00 with quick turnaround time.

Thanks everyone...appreciate the insight...the part about the car losing power though...could that be an ABS issue as well? The timing belt is a given...along with suspension, trans fluid change, PCV..the usual list. Thank you for running the Autocheck...that was kind of you. I had pulled the CARFAX and found the same info. I got the name of the mechanic in Napa, so my next call is to him....but then again..he thought it was the computer. Probably just safer to tow it down to Socal unless I can find a decent garage up there to do the work ( that's not an arm and a leg )

ABS module for sure. Likely ETM as well. Both cheap and easy fixes. 30 mins to do both in a driveway.

Update. Never made it to the shop :( ...they sold it the day before. Local lady brought her mechanic with her. Needed a timing belt and PCV as well.

So, the search continues. Any nice White P80 Wagons out there for sale?
