Chicago, IL - November 14, 2002 - Navigation Technologies, a leading provider of digital maps for vehicle navigation including Volvo, Internet/wireless applications and business solutions today announced that phonetic transcriptions of its Italian NAVTECH® map database are now available. NAVTECH Voice Data can increase the functionality of voice-enabled navigation systems by reducing recognition complexities, improving output accuracy and expanding the system use beyond basic commands. This announcement follows the availability of voice-enabled map data for the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom.
NAVTECH Voice Data in Italy was developed based on local knowledge of street, administrative and destination names. Navigation Technologies' field analyst team worked with local authorities throughout Italy, from the tourism board to government offices, to confirm the correct local pronunciation, ensuring that systems using NAVTECH Voice Data recognize street names as they are popularly pronounced as well as their traditional phonetic pronunciation.
NAVTECH Voice Data includes transcriptions for street names, administrative areas, Points of Interest (POI) and metadata such as POI category names and restaurant types. In addition, the same set of data transcriptions can be used with either Automated Speech Recognition or Text-to-Speech technology.
Using Text-to-Speech and Automated Speech Recognition technology to interpret abbreviations, alternate pronunciations and other variants, NAVTECH Voice Data brings a higher degree of precision to navigation applications.
Many of today's navigation systems use generic, audible directions like "turn right" or "stay to the left." With the integration of voice transcriptions into NAVTECH data, navigation systems will offer the correct pronunciation of specific spoken directions like turn left onto "Via Dante Alighieri" or "Viale Francesco Petrarca."
Key benefits of Navigation Technologies' Voice Data include increased safety, added convenience and expanded functionality. By providing hands-free support, NAVTECH Voice Data makes navigation systems easier for consumers to use.
"The launch of NAVTECH Voice Data in Italy is our response to consumer desire for a more personalized navigation experience," said John MacLeod, Executive Vice President, North America & World Markets, Navigation Technologies Corporation. "We're uniquely positioned to leverage our field team to obtain the 'local' knowledge that can enhance the user experience and bring heightened accuracy to our data."
About Navigation Technologies
Navigation Technologies creates digital maps that power navigation and location-based services around the world.
