As mention in the previous post, I have just ordered a Cosmos Blue/Sand Leather T5. I ordered it with the navigation system. Three questions:

1.) Can anyone who has the nav. system share their experiences.

2.) I have read that the system can play DVD-Video's is this true?

3.) How do you control the system?

To answer your questions:

1.) This is quite possibly the most ergonomically correct navigation system there is out on the market currently. The screen is at the right place matching up with the horizon. It is fairly easy to use and does not take up any important space in the dashboard.

2.) This system cannot play DVD video's, but for the 2002 model year starting in January it will be a DVD based system and it might be able to play DVD movies, but I am not sure of this. In Europe, they do have a RTI television option.

3.) There are three buttons on the back of the steering wheel that contol all of the functions for the Nav System.

These are the buttons on the back of the steering wheel: Enter, Back, and a 4-Way directional switch.

The system just holds one CD for each of the different regions around the country. You will get the CD that applies to your region of the country. You will also get one free update. NavTech makes the CD's for the Volvo system, so you might want to check out their site. It does have voice prompts, but it does not have voice recognition.

The DVD based system should apply to all of the 60/70/80 series cars, since they use the exact same hardware and software currently.

One small correction - the current CD ROM based system uses a 6-disc changer. In my experience (we have 2 cars with RTI) unless you live on the boundary between two regions you will find that 6 is more than enough unless you are a globe traveling (by car) salesman.

Thanks.

Hi all,

I also have a couple of questions about the navigation system that I'm hoping someone can answer:

1. Does it have to be installed at the factory (meaning you'd have to order the car to get it installed)? Or can it be installed by a dealer? If a dealer can install it, does anyone know (roughly) what the labor would cost?

2. What features does the system provide? From the photos I've seen, it displays a street map with a line connecting your origin and destination. Does it offer any other functions? For example, does it provide voice prompts telling you when to turn? Also, how do you enter your origin and destination addresses into it? Can you zoom the map in and out?

It's kind of hard to decide whether to select an $1800 option from just a photo, so any help anyone can provide would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

Yes, it can be installed by the Rtailer but it will cost you at least $3,000 in parts and labor.

There are constant voice prompts at every turning point. Depending on what scale you set it, it will show just streets or as much as your local major deli!

Origin and destination addresses are typed it...it provides you with an on-screen keypad and you manipulate the address by entering the town and then the street address. The street name is easy as once you entered the town it will eliminate many of the letters since it will have in its memory only the streets available in that town. You should go to your local Retailer for a demo. That's how we sell this system. I have two cars equipped with the system and last week we sold 3 XCs with it (order cars)...

Interesting comment about the deli. So, I guess it's not just a navigation system.

What kind of information does it give you about restaurants? Does it display their phone numbers or type of cuisine?

Besides restaurants, what other kind of businesses does it have information for?

Does it have any kind of search functions? So if you knew the name of a business, it could give you the phone number or address?

Thanks!
