I initially posted this at the end of a Nav thread on the xc90 forum and realized that my question was a bit unclear, and also, perhaps in the wrong place. In any case - a question for all of you who have used both the 2004 and 2005 US DVD sets. We recently picked up our 2006 S60R at the FDC and borrowed the european DVD map. We noticed three items that were different from what we were used to when compared to our 2004 XC90 with US maps. These three items are:<p>(1) You can not select areas or roads to avoid<br>(2) The yellow triangles do not turn white as the car moves along the route<br>(3) The finest resolution is 1/10 mile rather than 1/32 mile.<p>There are other subtle changes as well, in my opinion, all for the worse. Initially I assumed that these might be just a function of the european version of the software, however, looking at the US Nav owners manual that came with our S60R, the 2005 US version seems to lack these features as well. Then, the thought crossed my mind that perhaps the software shipped with the S60 is different from that for the XC90 as the XC90 has its own model specific Nav users manual. So, for those who have used the 2005 US DVD set on an S60 (or any volvo, for that matter): Is it true that these three items have in fact been changed ? If so, I will likely use our 2004 software on our S60R when it arrives next month.<br>

Re: NAV software 2004 interface superior to the 2005 edition? (ncearthquake)

Much smarter people than me will likely correct or modify this, but FWIW, I don't believe the operating software for the nav is on the dvd; I believe what you have on the dvd is the database of geographic information, and I believe (based on my much more extensive experience with marine nav systems) it is in what they call a vector based system of notation (ie, each and every point and feature is described by a code call, rather than a raster "picture" of a map). I suspect your operating system is "firmware" or "rom" and various models and production dates may indeed vary, but I don't think the dvd's you get from navteq update your operating system. <p>Vector based nav software is much more sophisticated when it comes to layering of info and various manipulations, including simulated "3D"; BUT it is MUCH more labor intensive to "map" a given area and I suspect that, in comparing W. Europe with the US & Canada, there is much, much more work to be done (ie: not yet done) for our part of the W. Hemisphere.<p>If I am correct, it doesn't surprise me that one might get more "detail" in the European maps; there are some interesting differences in the European and US operating systems also, I think. <p>When in Europe, our '05 intermittently provided voice direction (in English), even though we were told that our Europe disc wouldn't provide it, but strangely enough it would come and go. <p>Practically speaking, doesn't the "0,1mi" scale give you more detail than you want? It does for me. If I recall correctly, our Europe disc had a fine scale of "0.1 km" which would be pretty close to 0.1 mi. (100m vs. 520 ft)

Re: (djeuch)

Thanks, however, - we currently have the 2004 version for our XC90 which we are quite happy with. It is the 2005 version that I wonder about - I suppose I can install the 2005, and if I do not like it, go back to the 2004, assuming it doesn't change any operating software.

willyjp,<p>you may be right that the interface is not updated with the new discs, in which case, we are stuck with what is on the system. We have grown to like the 1/16 and on occasion 1/32 mile settings. The ability to avoid certain roads is also nice, as is the general interface of the 2004 xc90/2004 disc. I found the S60 version/european discs less intuitive.

Pretty sure my firmware updated when I first installed the newer disks in my 2004 R....<p>There was a longish delay for startup just the first time and some things changed (I think)<p>

I recall reading that apon initial load of a new DVD it can take longer with the 'system loading' message which means new software is being loaded (which get put into firmware). I beleive I whitnessed the longer load the first time it put the new 2005.1 DVD in my 2005 XC90 last summer.<p><TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD><i>Quote, originally posted by <b>ncearthquake</b> »</i></TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"> We noticed three items that were different from what we were used to when compared to our 2004 XC90 with US maps. Re: NAV software 2004 interface superior to the 2005 edition? (LTA)

I think this thread is becoming more suited to the A/V tech forum (maybe moderates should move it?)<p>I just realized the intial posting is comparing 2004 XC90 to 2006 S60R and the 2004 DVD to the 2005 DVD. I think we are dealing with a few more combinations to compare.<p><TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD><i>Quote, originally posted by <b>ncearthquake</b> »</i></TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">...
