For those with NAV there is a setting you can adjust that allows you to switch from Light screen (good for day time) to Dark screen (good for night time) using the lighting selector switch. The standard way of doing it requires a couple NAV control key presses so I think 'my way' is better.
Selector at '9 o-clock':

Selector at '12 o-clock':

Enter the hidden menu (have the NAV turned off, turn off your car, wait a couple minutes, turn ignition on, turn on NAV and quickly press 'enter' and 'back' repeatedly while the 'System loading message' is on the screen)
Find menu 3.6 and change it to 'YES'

Exit out and you'll see that you can now change the screen from light to dark using your lighting selector.
ps. I did this in my 2006 S60R, I have not tried it yet in my 2005 XC90.
LTA

Have NAV in my MY2003 XC70 and MY2004 S60R. I don't ever recall changing this setting in 3.6 but find both cars have this set as their default. Thanks for the tip however.

Maybe my delaer messed with it (doubt that) or maybe it's a Canadian Volvo thing or a 2006 thing?
Wait a sec, my MY05 XC90 has three settings "Dark", "Bright" and "Contrast" but my MY06 R has only two: "Light" and "Dark". What do your cars have?
LTA
Re: (LTA)

My early 2005 V70R has:
Bright (as opposed to "light") and Dark
SW has been updated from original and is now Navteq 2005.1, which is two single layer DVDs.
Option 3.6 was found set to OFF, I have now set to ON.
I will assume by changing the option to ON, that VNS will make use of the light sensors in the car and automatically change the Bright and Dark settings?

Setting it to ON lets you change bright/dark by switching the lighting switch from 9-oclock to 12-oclock. If you leave it at 9-oclock the headlights will auto switch from DRL to HID when it gets dark outside but the NAV will stay BRIGHT.
It's just a way to have quick control over the BRIGHT/DARK setting of the NAV using the lighting switch instead of going into the settings menu of the NAV.
LTA
Re: (LTA)

You are correct. I did have it in my head that they were not dual layer, but I looked at the capacity and clearly they are. I guess we will have to wait for Blu-Ray to up the capacity from DL.

I was never able to figure out from their literature (paper or web) -- how do they split the two DVDs? Is it East/West? Canada/US? Is there any overlap? How would you plan a trans-continental trip?
The 2005.1 two DVD set comes with a very clear insert the shows exactly what's on each disk. Also, there is a clear picture on each disk that shows what areas are covered, just look at the disks themsleves. As for planning a trip the runs across both disks I think it simply tells you to insert the other disk when the time comes (but that's more of a guess).
LTA
Argh! Once again, my quest for information is foiled. I don't have the 2-disc set, and wanted to know how they split it. They never mention it, and ironically, you didn't either. I'm just looking for an "East 2/3rd on one disc, west 2/3rds on the other" or something like that.
It's split more North-South than East-West and ther is overlap. If you take a drive down I75 from Toronto to Florida you'll need to swap disks somehwere around Georgia (I think). I guess I (or someone) can scan and post a pic of map or maybe I'll wait to get my 2006.2 3 disk set and scan and post that one!
LTA
Re: (Haraldson)

If you mean with it switch from bright to dark display, My guess is that it will if your lights are switched on or come on if set to auto mode.

I recently purchased a 2005 XC90 with navigation. The system powers up very nicely.. only problem is it thinks I'm about 80 miles from where I am. The system is receiving signals from -0- satellites. I have left the system on several times now for up to 30 minutes at a time, and it never picks up a single satellite. I read about the secret menu and was hoping there would be some sort of a reboot, but wasn't able to access the menu, and not sure if it would help anyway. Anyone seen this before or have any tips for a quick fix? I hate to waste time taking to dealer if it is something simple. Thanks.
