Determined so far:
- Not the SAP
- Not the timing belt tensioner
- Once the oil has warmed, this noise goes away
- started to hear the noise after switching to 20/50 Mobil 1. (may just be coincidental)

What is the rubbing sound you hear when the engine is given a little gas and then lets off. If you listen carefully you'll hear a deeper tone whirling sound/rubbing sound.
video clip 1 - hood open
video clip 2 - hood closed
If you don't have Apple's Quicktime

Chris - everybody runs 5w-40 in their Volvos (and most other European cars) over here in Sweden for general driving from what I've seen.
I always ran 5w-30 during the winter up in Maine and 10w-30 during the other 3 seasons in NY. Synthetic from about 120K on.
That doesn't sound nice

Re: Name this sound... (1999_V70)

it was used in an attempt to quiet lifters, which it did. ugh.
What does 20/50 do that is so detrimental to these delicate motors?

Okay, I'll play.
To be honest, I don't think the valve clatter is all that bad on a 10+ year old car with high miles. I think many of our cars would make the same clatter if revved with the hood open like that.
The whirring sound that I think you were asking about and what I heard almost sounds like a bad pulley, or one of items driven by the motor, like the ac comp, alternator, or ps pump. Wonder if you can at least isolate the sound to the front of the motor and then work from there, also change the oil to 5w30 or 10w30 to see if by chance that is it.

I need to keep this puppy running for a few years.
The audio on the clip enhances the high frequencies of the lifters making them appear louder than they really are - it doesn't sound "overly" tappy with the hood up. I'll see if I can adjust the sound to focus in more on the whirling that does sound like a bad pulley, belt, etc.
Another symptom, after sitting overnight, there is a hesitation either with the starter motor or possibly the alternator not giving enough juice as it takes a extra turning of the key to get it started.
We will solve this mystery, hopefully as inexpensively as possible

Re: Name this sound... ([email protected])

That last thing you mentioned, the hesitation sounds like the B+ battery cable going bad. Volvo has a TNN about this that has you replace the cable. It sucks to just throw money at something, but if it is happening consistently this is likely the issue. If it only happens when the car is warm then maybe a leaking injector but you said it happens overnight.
