OK, it's about time I sought some advice on these two minor issues.
For most of the past couple of years my wife and I have noticed that about every other week or so my '99 S80 T6 (with HU801 radio) will make an errant beeping noise. The noise is high-pitched and tends to last just under a second. It seems to happen randomly whether or not the radio is on (and I'm not sure if the sound comes from the speakers or not).
Yesterday, for the first time, another anomaly (possibly related) occurred. This time we heard a high-pitched beeping noise for over a second and the radio actually turned on. The radio display showed 'Alert!' for about 3 seconds and then the radio turned off. I searched the users manual and the closest I came is mention of an 'Alarm!' indication for the 801 radio in the case of a serious accident or emergency nearby. I don't know if the manual is inaccurate and should say 'Alert!' instead of 'Alarm!' or if my 'Alarm!' indication is something completely different.
Does anybody have any insight to share?
Thanks.
-rdo
[email protected]

rdo,
That really sounds like the RDS System working, and maybe it thinks it is picking up signals that are not even there. Or it could be that it is actually picking up real RDS signals under development, just a wild guess.
-Drew

Certain radio stations can bradcast certain commercials (I have seen them displayed on my radio rarely) but nothing regarding true RDS as found in Europe.
Yannis

It's not as wide spread as it should be but I'm fairly certain we have RDS here in the US. I've been able to search by program type (in addition to getting the commercials on my LCD display) ever since I moved to Southern California 1.5 years ago and I had sporadic success prior to that around the Northeast corridor (between Northern New Jersey and Boston).
I also recall that one of my recent Hertz rentals - a domestic car (Grand Marquis I think) came with a RDS radio which was quite a surprise to me.

Thanks.
-rdo

quote:
Originally posted by GrecianVolvo:
I thought that RDS is not available here in the US.
