A little back story... We have been debating between an M66 C30 and an M66 V50 for about a year now. The V50 became the more logical option for transporting friends and family, Bailey's recent interest in playing cello, and my weekend trips to Home Depot for large random objects.

Embre (pronounced Ember) showed up 12 days ago on the local Craig's List. One of the better prices I have seen for a T5 V50, plus I figured there was some negotiating room being at a private dealer. 2005 with 140k miles, clean history, good service records, and in great mechanical/cosmetic condition; it has less rattles than my C30 and is surprisingly quick! Quicker than I remember my S40 ever being in stock form... The few imperfections I can easily fix/replace myself, but I was going to use those for negotiation on price.

It has all the options we wanted, but it's an AW55... We can live without AWD, the C30 is the race car and this wagon will never be pushed to the limits nor will it ever see harsh winter conditions. On the flip side, the geartronic is a step up from the 850 and we do still have one manual car in the Swedish stable. But I wasn't fully convinced and was prepared to walk away. The dealer asked me how much I would pay, I gave him an offer. No negotiation necessary, we had a deal.

At the price we paid, for a car that has been perfect for the 100 miles we've put on it, even if something breaks I won't feel bad throwing a little extra money into it. So with that, I introduce Embre, the latest MNIWT P1 build. It'll be a slower build than the C30, but there are some unique plans for this car.

Any particular goals for it?
Oh yeah, plenty of plans! But keeping them moderately secret for the time being. ;)
I'll probably do a basic Stage 3 by the end of the year. Suspension and cosmetics are the main goals for this car, which will be a slow progression over the next few months.

Following! :D amazing price, you'd pay almost twice as much for an object like that here in Sweden.

Plug and play right?
I volunteer you to be the first to find out ;). I'm sure the Volvo dealership parts guys would know you well. I have a big hammer if you need to borrow it.

According to the legend Clarkson himself. The mighty hammer fixes everything. Plus the Mord powaaaa Departement seems to be sorted out.

Nice pickup!

FWD is arguably better for modding. Suspension options are cheaper and much more available. Same for the DP...OBX is a fraction of the cost of the EST or elevate.

if you have a DiCE unit, I'd recommend looking into a Hilton tune. I'm loving the torque limiter delete on my S40.

FWD is also less to go wrong. ;)

I have both Elevate and Shark handheld tuners, so I'll be sticking with one of them. Personally, I don't understand all the hype about Hilton... Shark has been doing custom tunes based on DiCE readings for years and they'll also delete the torque limiters on Autos. [email protected] hooked up his laptop to my C30 while we were at the dragon, got all the readings he need. They were even going on live data reading runs with the K16 guys who were having boost issues. I was very impressed with their work and willingness to travel internationally in order to help us get perfect custom tunes.

Not denying that your Hilton isn't good, I'm sure it's fantastic! But any tune is amazing compared to stock. It would be interesting to see side by side dyno results on the same car, but running different company's tunes. Also the longevity of the vehicles running the different tunes. I know the Hilton tune is going to be putting out higher numbers than the "out of the box" tunes that both Elevate and Shark will sell, but I'm curious how the car will hold up as a daily driver, when tuned to maximum performance.

michael, i think were gunna have to have an intervention for you haha.
At least since its automatic you probably wont go over the top with mods and the car wont turn from a practical purchase into a project car.
Anyway

Didn't know Shark would look at data logs- I would've been more inclined to go with them if I knew that was the case. I wish they made that more clear on the P1 section on their website- no mention of it until you look at the FAQs.

Anyways if you already have a handheld there's no reason to consider another company. That's actually why I went with Hilton (since I don't have a handheld) and could use the DiCE unit for other things. Also got a considerable discount by emailing them. They haven't really posted power #s (no P1 dyno as far as I know) but I'm sure they're comparable to the other tuners.

Michael did forget to mention that he bought this car for me. That being said, all mods will be according to what I want in this car, which probably will not follow the norm of crazy lowered, 18" wheels, super tuned, DP, catless exhaust, intake, intercooler, bright blue stripe, etc. But I do have some special plans and ideas in mind that will completely shatter the "expectations" of modding a Volvo, but that will be 100% practical for me and my line of work.

Stay tuned everyone. :)

No no no. On the V50 you need to look more family friendly and sleeper. Go with WIDE 17"s. ;)
