From the inside. In my opinion, it looks really cheap to cover up part of the clear lens (aside from subtle eyebrows). Everything was done on the inside of the lens, for a from-the-factory look.

This old picture kind of gives a better angle...

I recently came across a guy on C30Crew who beat me to the punch. I had this idea years ago... It was my idea! ;) Anyway, his pictures give a good example of what it looks like taken apart. This is honestly identical to what I did (but on a C30).

As for today, I installed the Elevate Torque Mount. Below are some images of the difference between a very used stock mount and the new one. Just holding it, you can tell that it's very high quality.

Installation was a bear, Elevate says 20 minutes but it took me about an hour with mostly trying to get the bolts back in. Anyway, after driving around tomorrow, I'll give my official review on it.

any installation tips? why was it hard to get the screws back on? i haven't received mine yet but hopefully soon and was planning to do the installation myself.

From the Torque Mount Review Thread.

In my case, it took me about an hour. Part of that was having to remove my lip in order to get the car up on the ramps. Getting the old mount out took about 5 minutes, putting the new one in took about 30. For one thing, the new mount was a pretty tight fit into the provided slot, so it took a good bit of forcing (I highly discourage doing this on jack stands). The instructions say to connect the mount to the bracket that you "pivot down" before re-installing the two upper bolts; I had to install those upper bolts first. Then carefully jacked the bracket up about 1cm and pulled the mount down by hand until I could slip the bolt back through.

The difficulties I encountered are most likely because I have a 2004; I've noticed a lot of things are a little trickier to install on my car than they have been for other forum members.

Haha, thanks! I have a few more tricks up my sleeve for 2013, but I'm slowly running out of things to do! My girlfriend is in the process of getting an S70, so maybe that will be my next project.

I have no idea. Different cables with different software for different cars?

In-dash GPS mount

I've never been a fan of taping suction cup plates to the dash, nor have I liked the suction cup mounts that fall off the windshield in the heat/cold (not to mention that our windshield is a bit out of arm's reach).

Universal suction cup mount:

Drilled and fitted into dash:

And the final result:

Nice one there, MNIWT!

I'm looking to do something similar, but rather on the left side of the gauge-cluster... Where did you tap in for 12V power?

Especially when the FM-radioband are to be shut down here in Norway in a few years, then my phone will double as MP3player, GPS and some other neat stuff!

Careful with how close to the pillar you go, because the A-pillar is designed to bump out when the side curtain airbags deploy.

For the power source, I have run a 3 way 12v splitter hidden behind the steering column, which supplies power to both the GPS and the bluetooth FM transmitter. The splitter connects to the front seat socket, but it is wired underneath the waterfall console (so the actual socket is just a blank).

That's really interesting!

I know the pillar is tethered to prevent it from moving more than a few inches, but I would still fear my GPS turning into a projectile upon airbag deployment.

No worries at all about a thread hijack. I welcome additional postings so long as they're mildly on topic with something I've posted about :)

Oh , I do see your concerns about it, the inflation is violent!

My idea was quite similar to yours, but by fastening it from above the left airvent (when I need a new holder for the phone! :p)

I saw your video on how to pop it out, but do you think there's enough space for a fastener there?
I don't want to take it apart now, because it's REALLY cold outside... :p

and why aren't those videos stickied?? :D

Just pop off that first side panel (as seen in this video), and you should be able to see how much room there is to work with.

I have no idea why the video thread isn't stickied. The only ideas I have are:
1. all the videos are hosted on youtube and not photo sharing sites.
2. it's a lot of information and can't necessarily be ranked as a specific how-to.
3. it's relatively pointless how-to information unless you're trying to take things apart.

I think it simpler than that . . . you've got to contact the moderator to let him know.
He's not monitoring every movement of this site ;)

I think you had a "how to" thread. Ask him to sticky it.

I'll contact Tom then! Which reminds me... I discovered a few videos to add to that thread, and have a few on my computer that I need to upload.

I just read through the whole thread (and your website), and all I have to say is, bravo good sir.

Which GPS is that? I'm running an older Garmin Nuvi with traffic and bluetooth.

If you have some extra time you might consider making a linked table of contents at the beginning of your thread. I had one going here but have been neglecting it lately.

Hi - This is my first post to this site and after reading through your thread I just had to give you props and ask a couple questions. I have an 06' S40 T5 and until I discovered this site never realized the things you can do to these cars and now that I've seen your thread I'm in awe of what I could do to mine. I'm a complete noob at this stuff and probably couldn't do 90% of the things you did to you car over the last couple years, but I would love to learn. I have some ideas, but haven't taken any steps. You see, I've never been into doing anything more than stock maintenance stuff to my car, but I've developed a lot of interest lately to take on some of these projects...starting simple of course. The thing that makes me hesitant as well is the fact I have 115k+ miles on my car and wonder if it's too late to start doing any modding, but am sure there are some things I can do to make it more enjoyable - curious what what other people think.

I have some things I need to do "Stage 0" stuff, as they say, to keep it running but I would love to do some of these smaller mods as opposed to tuning.

I'll be going back through this thread and see if I can find various things that I might be able to tackle, but any suggestions on things I could look to tackle first or anything would be appreciated. Like I said I'm a noob, but I've been reading this site and a couple others for a couple months now getting a feel for what people are doing and what not. I know I could probably figure out some of this stuff in time and I have done some simple LED's upgrades inside and installed a Xenon light kit a couple years ago, but nothing too major.

Also, I noticed your selling some tips and might be interested. I'm guessing these are more cosmetic than anything from what I've gathered, but for the price it would be a good starter project as with my mileage I don't know if doing full exhaust is in the cards. Regardless I love what you've done with yours and am very envious of your commitment to this. Great job and thanks for taking the time to share with everyone.

Thanks for the compliments! I too have an older style Garmin Nuvi, not sure which specific model it is because I bought it used at a great price.

And that is an awesome idea about a table of contents with hyperlinks to each mod! I'm in the process of organizing a mods list (which you may have seen on the "under construction" page of my website), so a table of contents will be the icing on the cake. I'll have to do that some time soon... Right now I'm working on transferring my domain to MyNameIdeasWereTaken.com

Thank you for the awesome compliments! I feel honored for my thread to host your first posting; welcome to SwedeSpeed!

Of course first, we need to see pictures of your car! With that high of mileage, I would personally hold off on doing any real performance mods, but it is never to late to change the appearance. Depending on your budget, wheels are a great place to start. To keep things cheap, a can of plasti-dip can go a long way from blacking out your grille frame or blacking out the letters on the back, you can even dip your wheels if you wanted to. Before I can really answer your question in depth, what kind of look are you going for with your car? Do you want a really stealth appearance? Or an OEM+ look? Or just a few subtle things that only true Volvo enthusiasts would acknowledge?

If you do want to alter the performance in such a way that isn't affected by your current mileage, I can now really encourage installing the Elevate torque mount. I have 103k miles and it made a huge difference (I would rank it as a 4/10 on the difficulty scale). The intake turned into a pretty big project, not something I would recommend for a first big mod, plus it's more of a cosmetic piece than anything else (though there are gains). But like I said above, what do you specifically desire out of your car? Then I can help point you in a more clear direction.

The exhaust tips that I have for sale are purely cosmetic. Let me know if you're interested and we can make a deal!

It sounds like you're really passionate about your Volvo, you will undoubtedly fit in well here on SwedeSpeed. I could barely apply a sticker straight when I first joined this forum, but this thread really shows how I've learned, progressed, and matured in the last few years. I'm sure you'll come to find (if you haven't already) that SwedeSpeed is a treasure chest of knowledge and we have a very welcoming and polite (though often sarcastic) forum.

Hey, thanks for getting back to me. I was busy all day yesterday doing some stuff with my car and didn't get around last night to responding. So I've never really taken any pictures except for when I got it, but I could snap a couple I suppose. It basically looks like you're except a lot uglier :)...I'd say overall it's in good condition besides the normal wear and tear of everyday driving. I live in an area where weather can get bad and combined with my long daily commute the car has taken a beating the last couple years with the elements.

So as far as what I would like to do I think that's where I'm stuck because I'm of the mindset that any type of major tuning is mostly out of the question because it would be hard to justify the cost/benefit. Although I would love to do some of those things I just can't see the point at this stage. Maybe when I get a new one, but with no timetable on that I'm going to have to wait. I think I'd honestly like to do more cosmetic things, albeit subtle stuff, that isn't too gaudy or generic looking and doesn't look like I'm trying too hard. I just want to make some improvement that would get me learning and doing projects to improve the look and feel. I really like the stealth look you can get, but OEM+ type things attract me so I can't say 100% either way. I could care less about turning heads, but I just want to do things that I like that will make me feel good about the work I've done and make owing the care as enjoyable as I can while I still have it.

I think the torque mount is something I really would like to give a shot though, especially after reading about your experience. It's nothing anyone but I will notice and it's fairly inexpensive. It seems like I can do it with my limited experience. I mean I'm not a total noob, I know what and where most of the components are, but I just haven't historically spent much time fussing around with too much stuff. I also have considered something like the turbo intake pipe from Elevate and/or the air intake. I've been back and forth about the intake mostly because I already use a K&N air filter and have wondered how much benefit it would really give me based on some things I've read here about it.

Combined with some regular maintenance tasks that need addressed I'm pretty much up to any ideas of some simple things that I can start to tackle and go from there to some more advanced. I've never used plastic dip so something like that I'd like to look into and see how it can be used. Also, the way you've modified your headlights and emblems and such I thought were pretty cool and being familiar with my headlights I might be able to do something there. I had some ideas based on things I've read and seen, but then I found your thread and it really opened my eyes to a lot of the other things we can do to this car so it's exciting to see what I can do. I'm aware a lot of these things people do are custom, but I guess I'll have to steal for a little while until I start to get better at this so maybe when I get my next one I can apply a lot more TLC to that one.

I've been stalking this site for a while now and I really like the volume of information and willingness to share/help others learns of all skill levels. I haven't really had to say much since I'm usually able to find a topic and/or solution to most questions I would've had. I think now I'm just speaking up because I need some direction on where to take my car. Anyways, I appreciate your interest in my plight and will probably be going through your thread a little more to see what I might want to tackle. Oh and I think the tips might be something I can do, I think I'd like to give them a shot and your price is fair. The rear of my car doesn't look like yours does with them on, but I think they won't look too gaudy...of course I'll never know if I don't try it. - Thanks

For starters, maybe space out your V O L V O letters on the back. The grille and the headlights are two very unique things about our cars (they're fairly unique compared to other Volvos as well) so that's somewhere that you can really do some customization. I'll tell you right now that vinyl wrapping your grille frame is nearly impossible to get perfect with all the sharp curves. If you want to black out the chrome, then plasti-dip is the stuff (plasti-dip can also peel off if you ever wish to remove it). As you can see with my grille, I did vinyl wrap the iron slash.

Since you are comfortable with the headlight assemblies, maybe go your own custom route there! I'd love to see what my stealth headlight project may inspire in others.

When I put in the Injen intake, I noticed an improvement in throttle response and of course the loud swooshing intake sound. There is a slight MPG increase, but this is mostly an under-the-hood cosmetic piece. Your money will be best used elsewhere, unless you really want an intake (which I did!).

I'll send you a PM with details on the exhaust tips!
