For right now, the car is all stock under the hood but I've made a few cosmetic improvements (in my opinion they're improvements). I just wanted to show what I've done and see what y'all thing. I may be able to answer a few simple questions too (like good adhesive for reapplying the V O L V O letters and how to get the air vents out without damaging the dash)

November 6, 2010 - The sequel car purchased with a few things carried over from the previous car (spoiler, floor mats, and other little interior/exterior details)

January 3, 2011 - Windows tinted

I hate driving around in a fish bowl.

January 6, 2011 - Rvinyl Dash kit, painted air vents, and silver rings on the control knobs

January 15, 2011 - "S" painted red with "40" removed and vinyl bars added to the taillights

January 20, 2011 - Pilot Exhaust tips installed

These are the exhaust tips http://spoilers4less.com/plt-pm-552.html BUT I bought these from Walmart for $12 a piece. You won't notice any difference with the resonator, and that's not why I bought them, I purchased these because they fit perfectly over the factory Volvo exhaust tips and it actually looks like I have dual exhaust now. When mounting them, I slid them back as far as they would go; they're the exact same length!!!

January 27, 2011

So here is where there are some changes. As you can see, I have the V O L V O spaced out like on the 2010 models. I simply took off the old letters with dental floss and stuck them back on with 3M VHB tape. I believe there's 3" from the center of each letter to the next.
You'll also notice that the letters are all blacked out, I thought it looked good against the gray color of my car.
That is an OEM spoiler, but it didn't come on the car.

I have the brushed aluminium trim, but I got some vinyl so I could do smaller thing. You can see that I did the plastic piece around the door handle and lock.

Lots of changes on the inside. I have brushed aluminium around the lights nob, on the steering wheel buttons, on the shift nob, around the steering wheel below the gauges, and between the screen and the CD slot. It may seem like a lot but I like it.
I also painted my air vents (the right way). Yes, there is a Transformers logo on the center vent.
This is a 2004.5, so I added the silver around the radio nobs like the newer models have.
There are brushed aluminium pedals (not the Volvo ones.... but not the stupid ones you get at Walmart either). These actually fit quite well.

Picture of the dash from the other side.

The ipod dock is made from a Belkin FM transmitter and a salt container. I covered it with material and it doesn't look half bad (it fits nicely in the cup holder and it's also a nice way to hide spare change)
Just for laughs, I have a NOS energy drink cap over the 12 volt socket. the caps actually fit perfectly over the socket plugs already.

great work! how's the vinyl holding up on the steering wheel buttons? is your rear spoiler the same color as your car, or is it darker (might just be the pic)? oh, and how did you "add the silver" on the radio knobs? (is it vinyl? a metal ring?) I know there are lookalike rings from CFwerks, but the ones you have seem to be a bit thinner...

Thanks!
The vinyl on the steering wheel has been fine so far. I cut it out myself though, so it took a few tries to get it just right. Cutting the thin line around the cruise control button was the real challenge.

The spoiler is the same color, Flint Gray Metallic, it's just the lighting. I plan to get better pics of the car (in and out) soon.

I'm really into miniature modeling, so I have a lot of paints and small brushes. I actually just painted a silver on there. It takes a steady hand, and of course at close examination you can tell it's been painted. But from sitting back in the seat, it look fine :D

(sorry for the grainy pictures... my camera died a few months ago so I've just been taking pics with my ipod)

On the center vent there are 8 plastic "pins" holding it in (see the image below)

You can see two on top (above each vent grill), so there are a total of 4 on the top and 4 on the bottom. The ones on the bottom are directly below the ones on the top.

My advice is to do this: with a butter knife, feel around on the bottom part of the vent (between the plastic vent and the soft dash) until you find the pins. Then push them in to force the springs back, it's tricky, but once you get all four on the bottom, you should be able to life the bottom part of the vent out (it will still be attached on the top). Then it was just a matter of pulling the vent and trying to push the top pins in. It sounded like I was breaking it when I was doing this, but it was fine. Once you finally get the vent out, you'll see there are cylinder like things coming from each vent (you can see one of them attached in the picture). But the only thing holding the vent in now will be the emergency flashers switch. Just unplug the wires, and then you'll pull the button itself out the front of the vent. As far as disassembling the vents, it's pretty straight forward just looking at it. They're cheap plastic parts though, so be careful not to break any of them. It's sorta like a puzzle disassembling and reassembling these.

I didn't take any pictures.. and I can't find a picture of the side vents. But it's pretty much the same process for getting the vent out (I started with the bottom pins and then did the top). The placement of these pins are in same relation to the vent grills as they are on the middle vent.

It's not too hard, but be VERY VERY VERY careful not to try and pry the vents out. The dash is soft, and it can be damaged easily. Even using a screw driver can mess it up, that's why I recommend a butter knife (maybe even 2 butter knives and another person to help you).

I'm sorry if my directions aren't very clear... I looked around forever trying to figure out how to take these out, and I finally just did it myself. Maybe I should make a demonstration video... another project for a later day.

Best of luck in taking them out. The vents fit pretty snug, so if you do break anything.... you could always just hot glue it back into place. I doubt it would move around that much, if at all.

VERY VERY cool. Good nice fitting mods on the cheap. I'm interested in the perfect matching vinyl colour? (or did you just cover up all pieces in that vinyl?) as well as the pedal (brand/store) as well as the Pilot exhaust tips both dimensions, size and cost. Can I get a shot from the side?

I got two gift cards for Christmas, e-bay and Walmart.
This is the vinyl kit I got (off ebay) http://www.rvinyl.com/Aluminum-dash-kits-volvo-s40-2004.5.htm I only used a few pieces though, the rest got cut up so that I could do the steering wheel and shift nob. It's not a perfect match, but I think it's pretty close. And no, the main parts of the car that were already brushed aluminum aren't covered up.

The brake pedal is almost an inch too wide, but you can't really tell. After looking around for the best pedals that would fit on an S40, I found a great deal on these at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Racing-Pedal-Slotted-Holes-Automatic/dp/B0042L65VQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1296215984&sr=8-1. To mount the brake pedal, I put the screws on the inside holes (instead of the recommended screw holes) but that was fine. I also bent the gas pedal to match the curvature of the plastic gas pedal already. That was easy enough :) Close up, no pedal covers are going to look great, but I'm very satisfied with how these appear when I getting in and out of the car, and from the driver seat. (these have much sturdier mounting brackets than the walmart ones do, and I was able to put these in in about 10 minutes. $12 is a lot cheaper than Volvo's pedals for $70

Looks nice, you are quite an artist! The stereo / hvac buttons look really good and the steering wheel looks nice with the accent around the buttons. I want to do the spaced lettering on my car but I´m worried that once I take those letters out the paint will have permanent marks on the old position that cannot be polished out.

One very nice touch that my V50 has is that the original owner painted the housings on the headlamps, so instead of black I have silver housings, which give it a very unique look to my car, because they don´t look quite like the newer 08-11 headlamps, yet look different from the black housing ones. Here´s a pic.

I like the silver!! It compliments the body color nicely. I also like the matching front spoiler and skirts. Are those just the black plastic ones painted or are they after market? (They don't look quite like the sport package spoilers and skirts)

I was worried about the fading in the paint as well. My car's a 2004.5, but over 6 years later there wasn't much fading in the paint. After rubbing with a little goo-gone, you couldn't even tell. In the right light, you may see a bit of a phantom line where the letters used to be, but rarely does that happen. I would say go ahead and remove just one of the letters and clean it up. If it looked like it's faded then put it back where it was, otherwise you can space them out :)

The original owner painted those also and they have hold pretty well. The only thing I´ve been thinking off is if I should paint the last remaining molding below the doors also or leave them like they are right now.

I´ll do the lettering spacing this weekend...

the blue horns add a nice touch... I prefer them black or remounted somewhere not directly visible...and about the eyebrows: nice! plastic or vinyl? any plans on painting them?

Plastic, I thought about painting them, but for right now I'm just going to leave them black. If I ever get around to buying a body kit (for the side skirts and front and rear spoiler), then I may have the eyebrows painted with that.
