My R owner encounter

Ok, I read and learned from some of your attempts at approaching and talking to another R owner.

So, here is how it went for me.

I was in a grocery store parking lot and I see the exact same looking car as mine (Silver/Nordkap V70R)! I have seen only two other Rs in town and I know both of the guys who drive them. I see a middle aged woman walking to it. I see that she is on the phone and she can see I want to say something so, she tells other person on the phone to hang on. I say nice car as I point to mine a couple of spots away. I ask her what year. She thinks for a moment. She says just a second since they have had four Volvos. She finally says the first year they came out with the R. I am thinking that she just may be an enthusiast! I say mine is an 05. Then, she asks "what is so special about the R anyway?" I just say "an extra 100 horse power than the standard wagon and AWD too. I figured that there was no point in talking more about the virtures of the R or this site at that point. I say that I haven't ever seen one just like mine before and just wanted to say hi.

So, was this person related to anybody on this site? Grand Rapids MI.

haha, well at least you tried. I've actually have had positive outcomes from doing something like that, but they are usually already members

When she asked why the R was so special, you should have asked her if she ever pressed the pedal down more than 1/4 of the way. She probably thinks those 3 buttons on the dash just adjust the seat settings.

The seat settings..that's good but sadly probably true. Look on the bright side; owners like her will never know what they have when it's time to sell. Now if you had approached me I would talk your head off about our cars.

EXACTLY!!! How the heck do you think I was able to afford mine when I bought it one year used??

A word of advice on parked R's.. just park next to them. If they have some even remote interest in it, they will spot you and stare that's when you make the move. My folks drive an SR.. they would have no interest in talking to anybody about it, that's for sure. On that note how come pretty much nobody on here has magic blue?

I saw a V70R yesterday, rolled down the window, and waved as I passed. It was a 40ish year old woman oblivious to the reason someone would be waving.

This is a scene that has become quite familiar when I spot V70R owners. I have only seen one that I knew was a definite enthusiast (19" Volution rims and Heico dual exhaust gave that away).

LOL, I've gotten the best reactions from non_Volvo owners. More kids and randoms ask me about the R, and I've yet to have any success with my "It's a Volvo thing" waves and points to other R's - or the 2 or 3 R's I've parked by here in Chicagoland.

I think, if you're looking to have a conversation about the R, the LAST person you'd want to ask is another R owner (a random one, that is. Not a SS'er), as they probably just bought the most expensive Volvo they could, and are also likely arrogant and oblivious. LOL
