... well, I went to go have my patented JRL mod done today at my favorite custom exhaust shop, Great Lakes Customs, here in Michigan. Greg does NOTHING (no repairs, mechanic type stuff, etc) other than bending up and installing crazy street rod custom exhausts, and has for nearly 30 years. He has made a couple really wild from scratch systems for me.
http://www.greatlakescustoms.com/
Initially I just went to him for my JRL mod, but got to talking and thinking about tips. While I don't want to / can't do a full exhaust or anything under lease, I did want someting a little different (don't I always ).
Anyways, I sourced some square, angle-cut, intercooled Borla tips from Summit, and Greg welded up everything in about an hour while I waited (and helped ... actually, I think I just slowed him down ). He really is an artist when it comes to being careful and positioning things just so.
So, at the end of the day, I left with no resonator, and 2 new tips, and only 135 dollars poorer (remember, I bought the tips beforehand). Here is my JRL mod with a twist:

... and actually JRL, my wife participated in a fund raiser for the fight against Womens Breast Cancer in support of "Warriors in Pink" today. Ok I gave you for the carbon fiber interior but those tips are . Personally I don't like square tips but it's also because you can see the original circular ones inside. It kinda gives it away that you stuck on tips.

QB
One question, you've done a great job of removing the chrome on the outside, so why chrome tips? Did you consider powder coating to better match your other efforts?
-Jon

Re: My JRL mod ... with a twist (Quick Brick)

Out of curiosity, is the inside diameter of the Borla tips smaller than those on the original exhaust system (2x2.5"), or do exhaust gases also exit via the little ports between the round and square tubes? Maybe the square look is throwing me off, but they do look smaller in the photos.
I do want to applaud your creativity. I think the boldness of the Sonic Blue paint is playing with your mind... in a good way.
- Tryg

Quick, I like the tips. However, the powdercoated graphite tips REALLY puts a bug in your ear...DOESN'T IT?! lol
How does the car sound without the resonator? I have not heard any repsonses yet on how it sounds with the Sonic blue/Nordcap combo.

We opened up the inlet diameter slightly and slipped the over about 1" of the old tip we left on the pipe for that purpose, then welded it on. The "ring" and the "fins" are maybe and inch long. Gasses pass through the entire square opening you see.
Eric_H, that is the unfortunate reflection of my tripod ... smarta$$ .

Nice mod. I have an idea for your consideration. Look at your first picture. Do you see the "ugly" silver muffler and pipes. You can make them disappear; by applying (sparingly) heat resistant SPRAY PAINT.
Looks good lasts a long time, no codes, voids etc.
Signed,
Curt the self appointed king of spray paint

To be clear the pipes I refer to are in the center and foward from the muffler to the resonator. Not the silver tips.

That is not a bad idea ... I have been known to use a rattle can in the past myself .
