Hi everyone,
This is my first post here but I've been following the forum here since I bought my 2005 s40 2.5i last year. I'm actually coming over form the Alfa156.net forums since I sold my Alfa before moving to the U.S.. Unfortunately, I'm having a really weird problem with my s40 that hopefully someone can help me with here.
A few months ago I parked my car in my garage and left it there for a about a month with the handbrake on. Then when I tried to back it out, the car was stuck! The handbrake was off but yet something was resisting the car from going backwards even if I added quite a bit if gas. There was nothing behind the wheels from stopping it from backing up. Finally, with a great deal of gas, I got the car to back out. But thats not the end to the wierdness. Now, everytime I put the car in reverse, I get this loud cracking or popping noise underneath the car as I backup. It happens mainly when I'm backing up the car on a hill.
I'm bring the car in for its first service next month so hopefully they can figure it out, but I just find it depressing that I'm having problems with my s40 when the car has only 4000 miles on it.
Any insight would be much appreciated

Re: My first post...weird problem with my s40 (norseman)

The handbrake shoes got stuck due to the long period of not moving. You did the only thing you could to break them free, but now they need to do some work. Try driving along and pull the handbrake (while holding the button!) to scuff them back into shape. If that doesn't completely help, do the same while backing up.
Next time, I recommend leaving the brake off if you leave the car for long periods. Especially if the climate is moist...
Tom.

Re: My first post...weird problem with my s40 (tmtalpey)

Thanks for the reply, Tmtalpey.
I guess I'll keep the handbrake off from now on when I park the car. I'm not sure if the popping noise I'm hearing now under the car when I'm reversing has anything to do with the shoes getting stuck. I remember them starting at the same time, but it could be a different problem all together.
Thanks again. I feel a bit better now.
P.S. Typo in my original post... should be S40 2.4 not 2.5

Re: My first post...weird problem with my s40 (norseman)

It's entirely possible that some of the friction material from the emergency brake shoes has bonded itself to the tiny drums inside the rear brake rotors. That could be the noise Your hearing. A suggestion if this ever happens again is to try pulling forward as opposed to backing up. Up here in the great white north frozen (stuck) brakes in the winter are common.

Re: My first post...weird problem with my s40 (POWERSTROKE)

Thanks powerstroke for the advice. I live in San Francisco so I'm not sure it was due to cold but most likely moisture.
