I have a 2001 S60 and a couple of months ago it started leaking oil on me. The leak is coming from somewhere from behind the engine, by exhaust manifold. I thought is was oil pan, but its not. Seems as if the whole rear side of the engine is covered in oil. Its not a big leak, as the level of oil hasn't been noticeably falling. It seems as if oil gets onto drive axle, which throws oil around. I don't know if there is some gasket or seal on the back side that needs to be replaced or what. Maybe oil cooler seals? If someone had/has a similar problem and has any suggestions, I'm open to everything. Thanks guys.

Is it a turbo car? Use some brake cleaner to clean it off and pin point the leak. I found the oil cooler seal leaking in the XC70. Hard to pin point at first because the air flow from the belly pan was throwing oil all over the place.

Is there anything in that spot that could possibly be leaking oil? I'm 99% certain that its engine oil, not tranny or power steering, or brake fluid. When looking at the engine, the top part is always dry (above the 4 inch metal layer, the layer above the oil pan. So it seems as if everything below that 4 inch layer is oily, but the dripping seems to be coming from around the place of the oil drain plug/oil cooler lines coming into engine. I'm thinking the seals on the oil lines coming in/out of the engine are leaking and wind while driving throws oil around. If anyone knows what could possibly be leaking, I'd love to know.

basically it is the seal that keeps the engine and the transmission pressed together
its a big job if that is the problem.

BTW - i am shocked that at your miles it is going bad... you do have an 01 but these should last longer than 50k - what is the typical storage of the car like? Do you have very many short trips/not letting the engine warm up?
Lastly - i am not CONVINCED this is it, but it is a compelling possibility.

I drove the car for about two years, to school mainly, about a 5 min trip.
But before I started driving the car, it was in storage for about a year. So it does sound as if that is the problem I have. I bought new suspension items to replace on my S60 so maybe I'll take out the engine with suspension all together and replace that seal. Or maybe I'll see where the leak is coming from.
Man, definitely don't wanna mess with it but maybe I'll do it over summer break.

I also have a friend who is a mechanic at Jim Fisher Volvo, so maybe he'll check it out. I've given him a couple of calls and he told me that usually there is nothing back there that leaks. I just don't want to invest a lot of money into the car as its worth about $6k only.
