My 15,000 mile service **UPDATE** Humming Noise Gone **UPDATE**

I took my car in for the 15,000 mile service today along with a list of problems that I have been taking note of. I figured I'd post this here for anyone that might be having the same problems. I'll list these items and what the dealer has to say about it.
Dealership: Hassel in Huntington, NY
Car is in for:
- 15,000 mile service, gave dealer 6 quarts of synthetic oil - shouldn't be any problems here.
- Axel ping problem - even though I told him about the XC90 nut, I got a call that they are using loctite... It's already been applied and have to sit overnight.
- Car shutting off on the highway at speeds. Happens when I accelerate fully then lift. I posted about this a while back. - Advisor told me, before I finished my description, that it's a software problem. - They will apply a software update. It seems they are aware of this problem but I never read or heard about it? He also said I should've gotten a letter about this
- Steering rack making horrible noise on initial start in the morning. - Advisor called back and said they are ordering a new seal and that it is the cause of it.
- Low huming noise coming from front of car at around 40-50 mph. Sounds like metal vibrating. Told him it stops when I apply the brakes.
- Tire rub on full lock, only on the right side. I told him I changed tires to all seasons but it only rubs on the right.
- Windows (front) squealing when going up or down.
- Fog light has moisture inside.
I will update the list with dealer's solutions when I receive the car back.
So far the dealer/advisor has been courteous. I guess the suit helps?
Good day all.

Remove all excess with clean dry cloth, allow to dry and buff. Repeat without the roll up/down step. The first step allows some of the silicone Rain-X to get deposited on the felt lined window seals at the top of the window. This is where mine squeal and this fixes that. If the squeal is from the tracks or hinge joints this won't do diddly.
The fog light. Remove the bulb holder, dry the inside of the fog gently with a hair dryer. Inspect the bulb holder O-ring. If it is OK and not cracked or damaged, lubricate with some petroleum jelly to form better seal. If that doesn't work replace the O-ring and do the petroleum jelly thing again.
Those are the only ones I see that you can do anything about if the dealer isn't able to resolve them.

02s60t5: No tints on my windows, not yet at least .
R_Rated: The humming was heard during hot dry weather. It was there for a while but now have gone away. I hope they can reproduce the noise.
StaggRlee: I hope they will address those two problems, otherwise I will try your methods.
Some of this stuff really doesn't bother me that much, but since I am at the dealer anyway... We'll see just how many off the list they can fix. The advisor sure took the time to listen to me, at least it appeared that way from the axel nut call.

I tried to get a similar noise diagnosed, but what do you know it was raining that day and the temp fell into the upper 70s so no luck. I'll be curious to see who is the first one to get this diagnosed and have some attempt at a fix.

Those cars now have to have the rubber removed and felt glued to it before you can tint!

Re: My 15,000 mile service (FastWgn)

Ok, got the car back from the dealer. Problems and solutions (or lack there of) listed below for reference.
- 15,000 mile service, gave dealer 6 quarts of synthetic oil - shouldn't be any problems here. car feels so much better, and tighter, maybe it's the sudden change from the loaner V70 to the R. Looking at the work sheet, says: oil change items, and then there's an item for gasket? Also an item for WW Solvent. Wonder what that could be.
- Axel ping problem - even though I told him about the XC90 nut, I got a call that they are using loctite... It's already been applied and have to sit overnight. Loctite fixed, said if there's any more problems to bring back. I took this answer and didn't push the XC90 fix. This will most likely come back to me. In either case, Cleaner and Metal Glue listed on work order.
- Car shutting off on the highway at speeds. Happens when I accelerate fully then lift. I posted about this a while back. - Advisor told me, before I finished my description, that it's a software problem. - They will apply a software update. It seems they are aware of this problem but I never read or heard about it? He also said I should've gotten a letter about this Solution is this: Campaign 145 ECM Upgrade. Item listed is "1 30677021 5 ECM Gasoline U".
- Steering rack making horrible noise on initial start in the morning. - Advisor called back and said they are ordering a new seal and that it is the cause of it. Power Steering Pump replaced. Advisor said they couldn't really find the cause so they decided to just replace everything instead.
- Low huming noise coming from front of car at around 40-50 mph. Sounds like metal vibrating. Told him it stops when I apply the brakes. Could not replicate problem. Bring back if sound comes back and will have Tech ride along. Grrr.
- Tire rub on full lock, only on the right side. I told him I changed tires to all seasons but it only rubs on the right. I'm sure we all know this one already. Roller limiter control arm replaced. Pretty much just added washers. Told me Volvo knows this problem... yeah thanks.
- Windows (front) squealing when going up or down. Solution is greasing the window mechanism. No more sounds for now
- Fog light has moisture inside. Says inspected and found no problems.
Pretty much any problems not fixed he told me to bring it when it occurs. Car feels much better, overall. Feels faster now, I guess due to the upgrade (reset maybe?).
Experience at this particular dealer was pretty decent. Nice attitude overall. Only problem is that whole "if you didn't buy the car from us then we can't give you a loaner" deal. I got one this time because they made the appt with a loaner car. But I don't get that. If I bought the car from Cali or somewhere far, am I supposed to just be car-less for a day and half?

I would hope for a major service, or if you have started to become a regular customer they could start hooking you up.

Re: My 15,000 mile service (HJZ)

Ok, time for an update on this. Since my 15,000 mile service trip to the dealer, the list of problems I gave them needed to be re-addressed again. My car is currently at the service department going on 2 days. The most important problem I needed addressed was that annoying humming noise coming from the front end that a lot of us are having. I will give this list another update with some info from the dealer, instead of starting another thread.
Currently car is at a different service department from the 15,000 mile service.
Problems from prior appt.
- Steering rack making horrible noise on initial start in the morning. - Power Steering Pump replaced was the last solution, full replacement caused binding noise to turn into a screeching noise on cold starts. SA update today: Ordering new reservoir to solve the loud screeching noise coming from steering rack on cold start.
- Low huming noise coming from front of car at around 40-50 mph. - Could not replicate problem was their answer to me last round. SA update today: said tech has taken out the strut and is replacing the strut bearing(?) to solve the problem. When asked what exactly is causing the problem, SA answered "I unno exactly but he is replacing the bearing".
- Tire rub on full lock, only on the right side. - added washers to steering stop was last solution. Still does it on full lock - brought up the problem to SA during drop off. I got the same answer from the first SA at the other dealer. He told me Volvo knows this problem and there isn't much to do.
- Fog light has moisture inside. - Last dealer says inspected and found no problems. SA update: ordering new fog light assembly.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New problem
- Told SA during drop off there is hesitation during acceleration around 3-4k rpms. Told him I think it's the TCV (of course quoting SS info here). SA update: replaced MAF sensor
Ok, so, are they just replacing parts randomly? I get the car back tomorrow so they say, we'll see what happens.

Re: My 15,000 mile service (HJZ)

Just want to tell you, HJZ, that this summary is very important for a lot of other people who have some of these problems. I don't have any of them, but knowing that you & others did, and what the fix is, is a big help in addressing the incompetence of a lot of our service advisors when faced with the same issues. So, in other words, thanks for sharing.

**UPDATE** Humming Noise Fixed **UPDATE**

Solutions in Bold: I am only updating this with solution to what I think our common problems are. Leaving the small stuff out.
Solution is: Replaced Power Steering reservoir because it was leaking. Also replaced suction hose
- Told SA during drop off there is hesitation during acceleration around 3-4k rpms. Told him I think it's the TCV (of course quoting SS info here). SA update: replaced MAF sensorWell, apparently the MAF was out of wack according to VADIs. The sensor was stated to be "out of range". It was replaced and for my 50+miles drive back home there was not any hesitation.
Saving this one for last:
-- Low huming noise coming from front of car at around 40-50 mph. - Could not replicate problem was their answer to me last round. SA update today: said tech has taken out the strut and is replacing the strut bearing(?) to solve the problem. See, on the work order that I have here, it is stated tha this humming noise was caused by the power steering reservoir leaking. It says refer to Job3 (the power steering job) for solution.
Regarding the low humming noise, which is completely gone by the way. I drove 50+miles home varying speed and driving behavior (includes spirited drives through curvy highways to crusing at 60-70mph at constant throttle to coasting between 40-70mph) and it has not occurred at all. I spoke with the SA in detail and attempted to get the cause of the problem. However, he said he reviewed the techs notes and it doesn't really all make any sense to him. I can't really pinpoint it on the work order either here but I know one of the following 2 solutions got rid of the humming noise:

1) Replacing the Power Steering Reservoir and suction hose.
2) Removing both front struts and performed strut support update because it was loose.
Now, number 2 was their response to my complaint of "clunking noise while engaging/disengaging clutch when changing gears", which of course I told him was the axel ping noise and has a TNN fix. However, their diagnosis was loose strut support. Exactly words being "Front strut causing play from front end when engaging clutch".
So all in all, I still don't know what was causing the humming/resonance from the front end, but I know one or both of the above fixed the problem. That is the most information I can offer. Of course I get the one tech who fixed the problem but wrote horrible notes.
Good luck everyone.
