Not too often you get drag racing Volvo stories, so I'll put this one up. I belong to a 5th Generation Camaro club and we had a club day on saturday at a local 1/8 mile dragstrip at Farmington dragway near Winston-Salem, NC. I thought hey, why not take the Volvo out and see what she can do, so I did. I knew I wouldn't have a chance against the V8's, so went head to head with a V6 (312 hp). The Camaro driver was new to drag racing and it would have been much closer if it was a seasoned driver, but anyway....I have a reaction time of 0.001! I've never been anywhere near that close to a 0.000. Had a near perfect launch at around 3,000 rpm, stuck like glue with the AWD and the sticky Pirelli's and the automatic. Ran a 9.629 ET at 74.047 mph with a 60 ft time of 2.169. Camaro V6 ran a 11.323 at 69.335 mph. I had better 60' times in the Volvo vs. my Camaro SS which is a rear wheel drive manual that is hard to manage wheelspin on street tires (of course I still managed an 8.819 ET at 89.7 mph once it gained grip).

hey are you on camaro 5?? I noticed someone over there that had a R in their signature.

What tune do you have letting you do a 3000rpm launch in the auto?

Well, I've raced a 2010 SS and won.. They're extremely slow for having 410 horsepower. I also beat an old 5.0 in the 1/4, and another 5.0 the day I got the R.

My most recent in the 1/8th was a 9.364 seconds at 78.09 mph, and the 1/4 mile was 14.463 at 96.30 mph. This was in 100 degree temps with intake temps above 150 degrees.

The 5.0 I raced did 10.107 in the 1/8th at 75.60 and 15.351 at 93.31mph in the 1/4.

Yes, I am! but i don't have the R in the signature. My hande is topgun1 on that forum as well. that's a stout E.T. and trap speed you got. I'm looking to do a turbo mod to the Camaro in the future. Not interested in S/C like everyone.

LOL, no tune...POWER BRAKING!! homemade launch control. left foot on the brake, right on the pedal release the brake and go.. 3,000 was as far as the engine would let me rev to.

That's a great time for your volvo for both 1/8 and 1/4. You have that extra torque with the manual. No mods and beat a 5th Gen Camaro SS? (stock 400 hp for auto and stock 426 hp for manual). 0-60 times are 4.6-4.8 seconds. quarter mile at 12.9 to 13.1. The guy didn't know how to drive and should relatively easy beat an R. Some of the Camaro guys with no mods post mid 12's in the 1/4 and the autos are actually quicker in the drag. Harder to hook up the 6 speed. My Camaro has about 520 hp at the flywheel and will run low 12' on street tires but I have to really manage the wheelspin. Next time I have the Volvo at the track with the Camaro, I'll do a comparo. I was just stoked about having a 0.001 reaction time!

I tried running the Volvo in manual mode but was actually slower by a couple tenths.

Actually my 03 was vortech supercharged. haha that was on 9.5 psi.

The 06 was turbo. I only ran it 3 times at the track before. It ran 12.0 @ 118 but the weight it higher than the 03, its a vert and only on 8.5 psi.

oh for sure!! Im playing with the idea of nitrous on the R. HAHA everyone thinks im crazy on here for wanting to do it but we can do it here. We have the knowledge. Hell i set up a customer with nitrous running a 427CI LSX with 26psi on a vortech in vette.
