Does anyone else have a musty smell coming from the vents on rainy days when the temp outside is between 50-65 degrees? How do I fix this?
-Justin

Re: Musty smell from vents on rainy days (Lost240)

I have yet to have this in any of my cars, but my friends have. One thing I notice is that they always have their AC on with the recirculator on. I only use the recirculator when it is really REALLY hot or when I first get into the sun baked car. After a few minutes I put it back to fresh air mode. I have heard that turning the AC off and letting it run in fan only mode just before turning off the car helps too, but I have never done this.
What can you do about your problem? I seem to recall a spray that you can spray into the fresh air ducts and people have even used lysol, but if your mold is really bad, you might have to replace your cabin filter too.

You might want to check your cabin filter. It sounds like a moist filter.

How can I get to my cabin filter? Are there any pdf's out there that outline this? Thanks for the input.
-Justin

You need to take the car to the dealer, and they can, in VADIS, turn on the blower to prevent this from happening. The blower will turn on for ~15 minutes some time after you leave your car, and will dry out the vents and such. There is a TNN on this, I believe.
Aaaah, the nasty foot odor smell.
I think there's a spray cleaner you can use if it's really that bad. Once you've cleaned the vents just get in the habit of running the system with the A/C off for a few minutes before turning the car off.
Do you usually run the climate control in full auto with the A/C on? When you run the A/C, condensation builds on the walls of the vents. If you turn off the car without drying out the moisture, it allows smelly stuff to grow inside the vents. You usually smell the odor in any car with an auto climate control when you've been running the A/C for a while (a few days, weeks, etc.) and then just run the fan one day without the A/C. That's probably one of the reasons that you're noticing it when it's 50-65 degrees. The A/C isn't running - and it's been much cooler over the past week in CT than it was previously.
-Eric

I rarely use the AC or the recirculator thanks to CA weather. However, when it rains it does smell a little musty. I thought it was just because the air itself smelled a little musty whenever it rains.

Here is a dumb question. When the red light is On does that mean that the recirculation is On or does it mean that it is off like when you turn the AC off and the Red light comes on?

If it is a manual switch on-off (because you don't have IAQS), then the light is on when the recirculate is on. If you have the IAQS, then you can set it to automatic or manual and the light is green when it's set to automatic.
-Eric

Re: Musty smell from vents on rainy days (Sue Esponte)

my car consistently has this on very high humidity days.....I even took it to the dealer and they set the blower to run for some time after shut down (which did make it better) but every now and then I smell it. Smells like the car has been on a horse farm........
