Welcome (back?) to Swedespeed, Chris.

Quote, originally posted by one40two-E »

Without spending too much money... what are some performance upgrades available to beef up a 142e exhaust system?

Cheapest - stock system in good shape with the car in top running condition. This would result in a "performance upgrade" from the existing setup and will last many years and the expense of a quality OE-style exhaust is spread out over time.
Expensive - Headers, 2-way headpipe with 2.5" stainless steel free-flow exhaust with one muffler and no resonator. Loud, $$$ and most all "performance upgrade" would be imaginary.
Best bet may be to get on the good side of a competent tech at a reputable (non-franchise) exhaust shop that does no other type of work then visit at a slow time with the car on the rack and talk up a full 2" system from headpipe back. This assumes that the existing headpipe and header have much life remaining.
If you go this route your hope-for "performance upgrade" will not materialize until you make additional "improvements" in engine breathing and fuel distribution.
Are you running Strombergs?
Did you ever resolve these?...
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=113759
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=113790
George Dill

The Simons Sport Exhaust, sold by iPd, Skandix and others, is a nice upgrade you can install yourself. No welding required.

Did you ever resolve these?...
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=113759
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=113790
Yes. Thanks to the forum members I located a heater valve and had it installed.
By the way this is a fuel injected 140, no carbs... Thanks for the input.

Is the Simons exhaust available for a '75 164E? What's the best source (had a hard time finding it on IPD).
What about a complete stock exhaust? Best source?
Thanks, guys.
Dan

Skandix is your best source, and they come in a bit less than IPD. Matthias tells me that the 2.5" system will bolt right up to a 164, and I got it to fit my 142 with a couple of minor mods ...
