There has to be a way to get an 05 R to play mp3s without going to an after market head and losing the wheel controls. Can i swap in a 08 or 07 deck from another volvo?

Re: MP3s... (sanderssb)

You mean an MP3 player? Do a forum search for iMiV. It's an interface you wire into your stock stereo to allow Aux. inputs. I'm getting ready to order one for my 04 to hook my XM unit into. Not sure how much functionality I'll get from the wheel controls, but as long as the volume works, I'm fine.

thats a good lead, but what about mp3 cd's? I feel like the 06's got them, why is volvo 10 years behind the curve on this.

I am not sure the HU850, used as the premium head unit from 2005 on was ever updated to decode MP3. My 2005 is not.
If the 2006 and above was capable, it would seem like they should be swappable, but cost may be an issue.

And factory car audio always lags way behind aftermarket. I mean jeez, my '97 didn't even have a cd player in it.
I don't know if there's one available for Volvo yet but there are adapters that allow you to keep steering wheel controls for aftermarket stereos for many vehicles. I'll do some looking.

Burning MP3s to a CD is an outdated band-aid anyway. You are better off connecting the MP3 player to the stereo. If that is not possible (cost or what have you), convert the MP3 file and burn it to CD.

I dont mind burning mp3 cds, i mean an mp3 dvd would be nice, but you can still get a ton of songs on a dvd and i would rather not use an ipod, just not a fan

Only downfall, cannot control the forward or backwards through the steering wheel or radio. But its still a lovely mod for the audio.

Re: (sanderssb)

I don't want to deal with nondescript playlists and loss of wheel controls either.
I just want to see my artists, songs, albums etc... Why do I have to use playlists?
I haven't looked into this for a while because of exactly that. The HU-803 is text enabled (I have the station details scrolling) so why can't it just tell me what song I'm listening to or scrolling through on the radio display?
I guess aftermarket HU is th eonly way to go to get this functionality, right?

I have an HU 850, with the same text scrolling. Why cant i just use a head unit out of a later volvo? or would the sound systems not match up. Id really rather not get an aftermarket head unit. The only ones worth doing are the full dvd/ nav ones and thats almost a grand or more.

ya, my R has pretty much no options, only the 3rd row seat. pretty convinced that an old man owned my car as he pretty much owned the front bumper on a curb, all the wheels had to be refinished from curb rash, and he left 1200 stud less snow tires on the car all year round, hence i don't have nav, or anything else technologically advance. The guy probably got rid of the car because the active chassis was too complicated to operate.

My 04 R and the 803 head unit played mp3. I thought it was standard for the R to play burned music
