I have a iPhone and given that Navigation applications are now available, I was thinking about a mounting so that it would be readable while driving.
Anyone tried one of those mounts that clip into the air vents (was going to use the one next to the drivers door) ? Was considering a unit that has a charger cable connection ability (either permanent or as needed) - any reviews/what to look out for etc ? (and my iPhone has a cover on it that I would not want to remove and replace all the time !)
Any pics of real world installations appreciated ! (to see if the charger cable gets in the way of the light switch etc ?)
Thanks
Re: Mounting a iPhone... (notthestig)

I agree on this. It seems the Iphone doesn't have the same userbase as SE with their smartphones, ie proper car mounts.
I will recieve a Griffin WindowSeat tomorrow and I will try taking it apart to mount it on the air vents using my old socket for the SE p1i.
I will take a picture if I succeed.
I don't realize why all products seem to mount on the windscreen.

Hi NTS,
I watched a You tube video re the pro clip and the product looks great. Also the usa site has a xc70 or s80 as the demo picture. I am decided to get that product for my newly acquired iphone 3GS (got one for the Mrs. also so it will be happy days in Hatdrivers household for a 24 to 48 hours anyways). I havent been to any stores but am having problems sourcing it over here. have you any ideas re this? I have sent a distress call to Clip On and await a response.
cheers
Hatdriver

Re: Mounting a iPhone... (notthestig)

Hi,
Pro-Clip customer service got back to me with this:
Please contact the following distributor for Australia:
Neovox PTY Ltd
Tel +61 1300 130 531
http://www.neovox.com
But when i clicked on it the site you suggested popped up so thats who i am mine from. I was initially thinking of putting the iphone on it but then the phone salesman told me that GPS comes out of my data allocation. I got the $29 plan/500 meg. I have had a NAVMAN for about 4-5 years and never updated the maps. So need a new one, and i want school zone/speed camera alerts on the new one as the older one doesnt have that. What do you have??
I have been waiting nearly two years to get one. They pulled the CDMA network and I signed up to an awful phone powered by windows mobile 3 mths b4 iphone was first released. my whole office is mac and literally within 3 minutes of turning the iphone on for the first time I had synched my mail, ical, contacts etc. Its sheer bliss after that windows freak show phone. I had forgotten what it was like to be on the phone for hours speaking english to non-english hardly english speaking lipstick telephone support staff trying to get a few of the options to work (of course I never did get them to work).
Cheers
Hatdriver

Hattie,
If you use GoogleMaps then then data access will cost you as it streams down and you are also without coverage if there is no phone range.
There is now a AU$80 application (and probably more coming) that loads the maps onto the iPhone so there is no data access. That is what I would get... (I have been waiting to see if TomTom release theirs soon).
http://www.sygic.com/
Regards
NTS

I recieved the Griffin holder but decied to ditch it, no holder for the powercable and a hassle to attach and remove the iPhone where the biggest flaws for me. Propbably made for the occasional traveller and not for people who drives for a living.
I have now mounted my iPhone in the car with a BroditProclip holder.
To solve the charge issue i connected a Griffin Charge Converter between phone an car.
The iPod cable was taken out from the cosole between the chairs and routed forward to the center console.

Re: Mounting a iPhone... (notthestig)

Hi NTS,
Just had a look at the Sygic GPS app for Australia and I will download it this a.m. It looks like it was only released 2 days ago. Thing is with my NAVMAN the cigarette charge cord is broken and they wanted $80 for a new one. This navman is about 4-5 years old with maps out of date and so I have been using a power inverter for the last few months waiting for my phone plan to expire to get my iphone only to find that usage of the GPS spends your data!! So currently i have cords galore and have to say will be pleased to be rid of same.
When you say waiting for Tom Tom to release does that mean on the APP store or is it from their site and you pay for the download. Whats the advantage with TT is it the speed camera/school zone warnings?? or something over and above that? I realise I wont have these warnings on the sygic app but I figure if and when TT does release and it is better then then I wouldnt imagine its going to be a whole lot more and so I could update with that.
Thanks for that I had no knowledge.
Must say its a real neat job JHellstrom has done. I guess he used power from his outlet in the console case. Having used the iphone for a few days i think power is going to be an issue. My wish list is to have it mounted on the dash so I can read the GPS (and avoid having a second device if at all possible), access music etc, have it on a charge cable. I dont envy having a cable extending from the centre console up to the dash.
Cheers
Hatdriver.

Re: Mounting a iPhone... (Hatdriver)

Well, I have ordered a holder and so on. I will await your Sygic review with interest as I will be buying it too if there is no alternaitive by the time the mounting arrives. Not expecting any radical differences with the iPhone TomTom app but it is what I have been used to for the last 4 years or so.
I have a older TomTom (need new maps as well) but this seems a better alternative to me as I would also have less devices around the car (I have the TT on a windscreen mount but 12v power hidden away leading back to the fusebox). I don't need to use Nav all the time but when I do, the iPhone app should be fine for my requirements !
I'll add some pics when it is sorted out...
PS. Yes Powering a iPhone is a huge issue !!!

Re: Mounting a iPhone... (notthestig)

I am using the Volvo USB/iPod interface cable that exists as a factory option to the pre MY10 cars. Now it's standard with a USB connector.
It's located in the compartment between the chairs in front. I relocated it to the front dashboard as you can see on the images. The problem with the iPod connector is that it won't charge newer iPods/iPhones. Hence the Griffin adaptor on the cable.

Any idea why it charges my iPhone 3G? Everyone here says is doesn't charge newer phones.

ProClip makes a swivel mount for the iPhone that will let you rotate it from portrait to landscape for when the new Garmin nav app comes out. I have it in my Jetta and it is really good.

That is why if you have a old iPod charger, it won't charge a iPhone or iPod Touch etc. Using the USB cable will be fine though.

All done !

Pics and comments on my flickr pages. The items are branded Clic On but are actually from Brodit.
All looks good. The Application for navigation also seems pretty good. Lacks a bit of iPhone integration (seems a straight port from other platforms) but not too bad.
