What are the most effective modifications to increase pre turbo power?
Once above about 2-2.5k theres loads and very little can catch, but I keep getting done by bloody BMW's out of lights.
I know that turbo lag is always a problem, but surely we can increase response without having to go for an anti-lag conversion???
Larger throttle bodies?
Port & Polish?

Anti Lag System is used on rally cars.
Pour fuel in to the exhaut while the throttle is closed, this will let the turbine spool while there is no throttle and the result is immediate boost when throttle is applied.
You need special ignition programming for it and it makes a lot of bang bang through the exhaust

what BMW's are you up against? V8 models??
the 6 cyl ones are no problem for a stock c70. but if you are up against M3's M5's and higher up BMW's you are gonna need a lot more Mods...
oh and make sure the TRACS is off.

Larger throttle body will give you some more initial lag than the smaller ones....but after that it'll be more responsive than the smaller stock one. It is more noticeable and more responsive once the car is moving. From stand still, you might not like it.
Port and polish won't do much on these T5s. Been there, done that. Not worth the $$$, unless you are building a race car.

Unfortunately, most of them are 6's - 328's & 330's
Not been against the M3 or M5, but like you say, will need serious mods to bag these - Kai, any stories to tell?
Once rolling the T5 leave's them behind, it's just that initial launch from the standing start.
I thought that port and polish would have made more difference, perhaps I'll just spend the cash on grey injectors or something...

You've really got your work cut out here.
The stock 0-60 times of the BMWs are both about 7secs (about the same as a stock T5) but I suspect that the 0-30 times of the BMWs are a lot quicker than the Volvo's (with the T5 clawing back the difference between 30 and 60).
For some reason, RWD cars tend to put power down more effectively than FWD ones (although why this should be I'm not sure - you would have thought the weight of the engine acting down on the driving wheels would help in this respect).
Bear in mind also that before the turbo spools up, you're pitching a normally aspirated 2.3l, 20V inline 5 against a 3.0l, 24V inline 6. Without the turbo, I reckon a T5 would develop around 170bhp compared to the 220odd of the BMW. The bigger engine is always going to win.
You could try switching off TRACS/STC (which uses the brakes initially to stop wheelspin), dialling in 4000rpm and then dumping the clutch but that's going to get expensive and you'll look silly.
My advice is to let them go. You KNOW you've got a better car; you don't need to prove it. Don't lower yourself to their levels.

Re: More Power Please! (SG)

I belive the reason for the RWD to do better is that its easier to push the car than to pull the car...hence FWD!!

This cuts the lag a little. for me, my turbo starts spooling up about 500-1000 rpms earlier than before, which picks up the speed a wee bit faster.
and exhaust modification may help a little, but probably not by too much.
not too sure what else specifically the ipd ecu upgrade does besides up the boost. it might be also makeing the timing of certain things or air/fuel mixtue more efficient, giving you more engine power as well as higher boost. but this is about 900 bucks...
and well im assuming you already have a K&N or some sort of higher airflow intake modification of somesort??

Re: More Power Please! (GShyneDM)

I've got 3 turns and read somewhere that more wasn't advisable - think I'll ad the fourth tonight though!
Am waiting on a Pipercross filter to come through but couldn't notice any difference when I added the K & N to my previous chariot. Perhaps that's because it was n/a?

Re: More Power Please! (topless_tart)

I would get an ecu upgrade..that should do the trick for the lesser bmws but the M3 and M5 we have some serious issures to work out before we can beat them..Bye the way Johana I want to get the turbo that you have from the european V70R AWD.. can you pm and let me know the cost. please.I spoke with my mechanic and he said it should fit in the c70 without any problems should be a direct bolt on..
