When I was at the dealer today getting the new angle gear installled, I asked their bodyshop people to look at the front bumper cover and give me an estimate for repainting it. While I have a clear "bra" on the front of the hood, it does not cover the "nose" of the car. The estimator looked at it and said, "Have you been in a sand storm?" I replied no, the car is three years old, has only 18000 miles on it and is driven almost exclusively in good weather (maybe 500 of teh 18000 miles). Unfortunatley, living in Wyoming, even if you take a drive on a nice day in the winter, you are goig to be subjected to sand (put on the road during a prior snowstorm) flying up to gouge the beautiful black paint on your trusty steed, revealing the white primer underneath. The nose of my car looks like it has white measels and some chips are showing up on the hood aft of the "bra" and on the leading edge of the roof. I love the color of the paint, but my advice to anyone who lives where they sand the roads in the winter would be to really think hard about getting the black paint. By the way the estimate for repainting the nose was $480. Hood and nose around $1000. Finally, while I was there they unloaded a new XC90 with black paint from the delivery truck. The white plasitc protective front cover (that shrink on kind of stuff) had come loose while in transit and the black paint on the hood was destroyed by the flapping plastic. Service rep said they used to get all their cars delivered in covered trucks, but no more.

Re: More on Black Sapphire Paint (Hi Alt R)

I just finished putting 3 coats of Zaino on my black sapphire R, and I had a great opportunity to get up close and personal with the paint. There seem to be quite a few paint chips on the lowest part of the air dam, and a fair number of tiny chips in the hood, after almost two years of driving. I drive in very good weather, and I'm a little surprised at the thin coating of paint on these cars. I had a 240 turbo that proudly proclaimed in its advertising that it was slathered with 32 lbs of paint - I drove that car in much harsher weather conditions (Chicago, Ohio) for 6 years or so and I didn't have half the chips - granted, that car was silver, but I payed pretty close attention to the paint.
I wish I'd installed the clearbra on the entire front when it was new.

Re: More on Black Sapphire Paint (Grendel)

This problem isn't unique to black paint either. I get plenty of chips on the lower part of my Evolve bumper. The body shop gave me some touch-up paint, but I'm kind of scared to use it. With my butterfingers, I'll probably just end up making it look worse.
In my experience, clear bras on the nose are not a good idea for a lowered car. The first time you run it into on a curb, you're going to have to do the whole bra over again. At least, that's what happened when one of the shops decided to mess up my front end. I told them just to leave the bra off next time around. The place that did the damage got charged for it anyway

Re: (JimLill)

This is the nature of black (car) paint.
Unless you've been driving in a bubble you WILL get a bunch of fine little chips and on black, every one shows up

Re: (JRL)

Welll..show up in a reasonable time. My Black acura TL lasted 3 years in good and bad weather before showing signs of chipping and fading on the front bumpers. This car after 1 year could already use a new paint job and clear coat. That to me is unnacceptable
