Looking for info on available build options for model year 2010 XC90. Appears to me that R-Design will not be offered in V8 version. Looks like only Executive and standard V8 configurations available. Can anyone confirm this for me?

Re: model year 2010 XC90 build options (GrecianVolvo)

Volvo did not tell us the car was not going to exist. The R-Design V8 is a current 2009 model so the assumption is that it will continue into 2010 especially since VCNA did not inform us of the change. So when a client says I want what I want and I will only take what I want, you offer to build a car for them. Now I can't even do that.
Despite the price, if a customer says they are willing to pay it and that is the car they want I will build it and be happy to sell it to them. Yannis you know as well as I do that the pricing on the XC90's has been a real sore spot since April 1st so the spread between 3.2 & V8 is grossly exaggerated in your post compared to what it was and what the VCNA support cash can bring a V8 down to.

In my case, for example, I wanted a diesel to replace my wife's 2000 S80. Volvo didn't offer one here, so I bought it somewhere else (Jetta TDI). My only guess is that Volvo couldn't make a "profit" on the D5 here so they decided not to offer it.
So I can only deduce the same goes for the XC90 V8 R-design. So be happy for Volvo! They make more profit by not selling cars!!!
If that's their intent I did them a favor last month and steered a guy at work away from a Volvo. He was asking about OSD but he wanted a 'reliable' car, like a Maxima. I could not honestly say the S60 would compare in the reliability department, so he bought the Maxima.
Yannis, do you still lurk? Is any of this filtering up to VCNA?

What's the problem. Send the customers over to Audi or Mercedes. Maybe you can get a referral fee, or at least a nice Italian dinner.
Another chapter in the VCNA saga. "You tell me what the customer wants, and I'll tell you why we can't sell it."
Pathetic

Re: model year 2010 XC90 build options (Sausca)

A lot of really good points and unfortunatel we have a difficult row to hoe in selling these cars in today's climate. This story does have a happy ending though. Even though the car company can't fulfill exactly what the customer wants the seasoned professional salesman was able to walk them both over to something we can sell which is the "executive" version of the XC90 V8 by featuring the high points of that product over the R-Design.
Sometimes you just have to stop whining, suck it up and forge ahead with what you can do instead of obsessing over what can't be done.

Not enough of you want to buy the car to make profitable to bring it here. V50 is supposed to be a "Sport" wagon. It stands to reason that in its turbocharged form it should look the part.

Just make the R-Design an option. Like it is in every other country.

This is the VCNA death spiral. Offer less and less, and sell less and less. The "we can't sell enough to offer it here" mantra represents a failed business plan. You have to ask yourself with Volvo selling maybe 35,000 cars out of 9,000,000 in the US if Volvo is still a viable brand in the US.
Hey Maxie, those 5,000 a year "R" sales must look pretty good now.

I appreciate the predominantly US presence on this site but Volvo UK are seriously bucking the trend in terms of sales. Sales are UP 11% on last year and R-design is a big part of that. Clever special offers are key to their success (Ice white C70, C30 discount of £4000 via the governments scrapage scheme (volvo puts in £2k!) and the Driv-e range are just some of the reasons. Volvo Uk is now currently running a free inspection programme which is actually a free software update to the latest level for all modules in any post-1999 Volvo. Free but instills confidence in the brand?
Volvo Sweden would not have been ignorant to Volvo UK's efforts. Seems you need some Volvo UK type marketing to move things along in the US.
The D5 and Driv-e cars would potentially be of benefit now Americans are starting to feel the cost of fuel prices. Even so, you are still about 1/2 the price per litre than we are in Europe....
