Has anyone used this oil on their car? it says up to 15,000 miles protection before next change out. I'm changing soon and want to get some feedback.

even if it says that, would you still go by that? i sure wouldnt. you should go by your driving style combined with volvo's recommendations.
if volvo says 7.5k between changes and you drive really hard, you might want to cut that in half. if you drive like a little old woman, then you can get away with the 7.5k, but i sure wouldn't go that long.

Re: Mobil 1 Syn Extended Performance (blackTT55)

Put it in the next oil change. Then run a used oil analysis after 7500 miles, and go from there.
What you fail to realize is that oil filters aren't made to be in the car that long. So you would have to change that out at least once probably twice. Since you're under the car why not just put fresh oil in it.
You are insistant on using only "volvo trans oil" which you deem special. Why would you risk damage on your engine with a marketing ploy?

This is a new Mobil 1 synthetic product, it is more expensive than regular mobil 1 syn so I am not downgrading. It does say right on the bottle gauranteed to protect up to 15K miles. I would probably not take it that far and change out at 10K.

Re: (blackTT55)

I just put the Mobil 1 Ext Perf in my R on the first oil change at 2200 miles. I'll do the next change at the 7500 mile service and then probably go until the 15000 mile service with this oil.

Re: Mobil 1 Syn Extended Performance (blackTT55)

15k miles on a turbo charged engine? If you don't really care about your car then it's ok. I'm using Amsoil 10w30 and I change it every 7.5k miles. The suggested oil change for the oil is 25k miles or 1 year. I also just started using Lube Control additive. I want my internals to be always looking spanking new.
I'm using these precautions because I read from many places that the number killer of turbos is extended oil change intervals.

Re: Mobil 1 Syn Extended Performance (volvoNB)

I think you misunderstood me. I just got it changed at 2200 and will get my next change at 7500 (free service). then after that 7500 miles later when the car has 15000 miles will be the next change...ie. every 7500 miles with M1 ext perf 10W-30. Definitely wouldn't go over 7500 miles for an oil change on my R.

One very important thing to realize about Volvo turbo's - most other turbo's are located further down the exhaust pipe, in the range of 8-12 inches or sometimes further, which decreases the exhaust temperature. To get the besp performance out of the turbo, Volvo incorporated it into the exhaust manifold, placing it as close as possible to the exhaust ports, which the exhaust gases have a greater velocity and shorter lag on spool-up. This turbo has higher temps than most, which is very harsh on the oil and will oxidize faster due to the heat, coupled with a fairly good heat shield around it to keep it from melting the firewall that also traps the heat there and not allow any air flow to help cool it, it compounds the heat issue. That's why in the manual, it specifically states to let the engine idle for a minute or 2 prior to shutdown to allow the turbo to cool down or it will cook any good petroleum oil in a very short time. Any of the true synthetics (Mobil 1 or AMSOIL) will hold up well, but a Volvo must be classified in the Severe Use category due to the higher heat it is exposed to in the turbo bearings. Mobil's extended service is recomended for normal use (non turbo/super charged engines, or trips longer than 8-10 miles to heat the oil properly long enough) up to 15K miles, but should be cut in half for Severe Sevice use, which would be around 7-10K miles. AMSOIL holds up far better than Mobil1 in all tests that been conducted. I'm running AMSOIL ATM 10W-30 for the past 2 oil changes. I switched over at 3100 miles, changed again at my free service 7500 miles and took a sample to be analyzed. I took another samle at 11,800 miles, not changing it this time. I'll sample again at 15K miles when I plan to change oil/filter. I live in Texas, so this summer is quite hot, and my wife (her car) is a gas and coast driver, not holding a good constant speed, which constantly spools up the turbo and coasts, etc., short commute and all of this is hard on the turbo and oil, then shuts down immediately when arriving to the destination. There are signs of some oxidation, but the pattern so far is that in her car and driving habits, the better part of the life of the oil will be around 8-10K miles instead of the 25K miles that the oil will hold up to in a not turbo engine. This holds true to AMSOIL's recommendations about service live when dealing with turbo and not turbo engines. I change the oil/filter in my Honda Passport once a year and also have it analyzed. The longest I've gone is 26K miles on one oil change and the results came back that it was still in viscosity, TBN was still above 6, no contaminants, and still good for use. I change the oil in the Passport once a year regardless of mileage and all test results have come back good for continued use. This goes to show differences in engine environments and driving habits, and the affects on the oil between turbo and non turbo engines. Which ever synthetic you use, 7.5-10K should be your max and change it when the oil is still good for use, but not past it's point of protection from acid build up caused by oxidation from the heat.
