My v8 has done the same thing since day one. My shop foreman contacted Volvo,and they want to change the power steering pump. They are going to change one on someone elses car soon ( guinea pig ). If it works, I will have it done to mine. I still think it might be the rack. I will post as soon as I find out how it worked on this other car.

Well guys, I am trading in my 90 for an 06 Range rover today (same dealer), but I will follow up on the one car that was getting the new pump. I will also drive my old 90 when they put the pump on that. It might take a little while as my shop foreman is at some national Volvo mechanics competition. If it is the pump, I still wonder what possible damage it might cause the rack. I assume it is a fluid starvation situation.

Full size range rover. It feels just as powerful as my XC90 V8.
O.K. I talked to my volvo shop foreman today, and he said the power steering pump DID NOT fix the moan & groan. I will be keeping in touch with him and will post when he has a fix. He says the pump job was a real bear, the whole intake has to come off. He also said that it is very hard to properly bleed these systems and it might take some driving around and then a re-bleed. Well guys, I went to the dealer today and found out that my XC90 has already been sold.

the used car manager apparently did not take my advice to have the shop foreman drive the car for a couple of days. Hopefully the new owner will complain about the groan and bring it in for repair.
It is also possible that the PS lines themselves could be the cause. They are mostly solid alum. and not much rubber. While they are somewhat rubber mounted, they are bolted along the sub frame area. There have been some updated PS lines for the R cars, but none have been made for the V8.
I am still betting on the rack being the culprit.
As soon as I hear anything, I will report back.

New tech bulletin #64-21 and it applies to almost all Volvos from sometime in 04 on.
Volvo is saying that there could be too much free play in the rack, so they advise tightening the preload adjuster. This could possibly cure all the various noises discussed here in the last two years.
