Hello,
Does anyone know if aftermarket chips (PES, IPD...)are a hazard to the S80's?
I heard that the S80 tranny is "weak" in the 99' and cant handle that much torque, but I also hear that Volvo has strenghtened it in the next few years...
I have a 2000 S80 T6

The cars are torrid!!!

You might also want to call Scott, at iPd...he told me a few months ago that they had chipped a 2001 S80 T6 for Volvo and let one of their Swedish reps hang on to it for a few months. I think he will be able to tell you the results! He told me that the Swedish people at Irvine were ecstatic with the transformation of that S80!
Yannis

Wow great
Now I know that there are alot of chips out there... Which one is the cheapest, I dont want to waste any money?...
Forexample, PES's chip raises hp "40 to 50" and costs hundreds less...

First I want to say that I have zero experience with the PES upgrade, and only experience with the IPD 850 R upgrade.
That said, if I were shopping for a chip for this car, as I have shopped chips for other cars, I'd ask around for people who tried them. I'd also try to figure what my criteria, highest hp gain? higher reliability? smooth power delivery? etc...
Chips can be expensive, and some are more expensive than others, but price is really irrelevant. I personally would much rather bave the more developed and refined chip myself.
As for which one is it, I have no idea. Good luck in your search. I just wanted to caution you from buying the cheapest chip because it is the cheapest chip.

Don't forget Wetterauer. Their alpha chip is more expensive but it's reputation is phenomenal (you pay for their plug-n-play architecture which allows you to switch between your stock chip and tuned chip fairly quickly - the other chip manufacturers replace your stock chip and unless you pay another $1k or so you don't usually get it back). As I recall they also offer free software upgrades /reflashing, etc.
http://www.chip-tuning.com/introUSA3.html
My knowledge of them is academic only. I was considering a new chip for my T6 before the economy hit the skids (it may be awhile before I feel comfortable enough to spend $1k+ for a new toy like a Wett chip).
Good luck.
-rdo
I dont know about the latter years, but the '99 tranny was a known problem at its inception. My car had a problem after about 6k and they had to replace the entire unit. Took only about 3 days and after that I had 36k miles with no more tranny issues.
