Hiya,

I picked up my '75 242 earlier this week, and am planning to get some work done on it this weekend before I start driving it.

One of the things that is kind of glaring on this car is the missing smog pump. The bracket is on the block, the hose is right there (complete with cork to plug the hole!), but no pump.

Fortunately this vehicle is not subject to smog req's in CA (only 1976 models and later), but can I remove all of the smog equip (such as EGR) w/out any mechanical issues? I am concerned about the FI, if anything I suppose...

Hi:

Your car was designed to run properly under a defined set of parametres, which include a smog pump. If you reinstall the pump and put any other deficiencies right, you'll have a very nice car. If you don't, you'll be forever adjusting and tinkering with this and that and the other, trying to get something that runs smoothly and reliably. No, cars with emissions controls don't have the oomph that some of us would like to see. But they're designed to run best with 'em, so my advice would be to seek performance improvements elsewhere. The amount of air flow is critical to proper running, and more is not necessarily better- it's a metered amount of air flow you are dealing with.

I understand that the vehicle was tuned with the air injector (smog pump) in mind, but the fact of the matter is that I do not even have the smog pump. So, rather than spending money & time down at the salvage yard in an attempt to find this part, I'd rather remove the smog pump apparatus.

Any advice on the proper tuning of the engine without the smog pump?

Hi:

What I'm trying to say here is that there is no such thing as "proper tuning" without the smog pump. Your car's injection is set up for the pump, so unless you're able to re-program the injection controls, you're fighting a losing battle that will result in a car that doesn't run particularly well. You can tinker all day long with other settings, etc., and you can't overcome what the injector setup is trying to do.

If you'll replace the pump, you'll save yourself more grief, trust me. Others here may disagree, but I've found out the hard way that there are auto engineers, and then there are the rest of us.
